Royal rift: How Prince William was ‘thorough pest’ on Prince Harry’s special day
Harry and William have been the source of great speculation over the last few months because of a rumoured rift between the two. The Duke of Sussex fuelled the gossip during an interview for ITV documentary ‘Harry and Meghan: An African Journey’, when he admitted he and his brother were on “different paths”. The confession was a stark contrast to previous claims that the intention was always for the brothers to work together when they both became full time royals. Since the documentary aired at the weekend, William’s representatives have published a comment claiming the Duke of Cambridge is “worried” about his brother and his wife Meghan Markle, and he “hopes they are all right”, but fears they are “in a fragile place”.
While the exact reason for the fallout is as yet unknown, over the last year Harry and Meghan have removed themselves from the trust they shared with William and Kate, the Royal Foundation, and announced their intention to set up their own, called Sussex Royal. They also moved out of their shared residence at the Kensington Palace estate.
However, Angela Levin’s 2018 biography, ‘Harry: Conversations with the Prince’, revealed that while the two brothers did get along in their youth, there has always been a great difference between them.
She referred to Harry’s 1984 christening at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, which took place when he was three months old.
The biographer explained: “Prince William, a typical impish, energetic toddler, didn’t like not being the centre of attention. He wriggled nonstop when he was told to sit down next to his father and looked equally cross that he wasn’t allowed to hold his baby brother.
“His behaviour made it very difficult for Lord Snowdon, the former husband of Princess Margaret, who was trying to take the official photographs. His assistant commented afterwards: ‘Every time he [William] did something naughty they all roared with laughter. No one admonished him and he was being thorough pest.’”
Ms Levin said William continued to act up throughout the christening.
She added: “At one point Charles tried to occupy him by telling him the history of the christening gown. William rolled his eyes, which must have been instinctive rather than deliberate. Diana didn’t take his behaviour seriously and jokingly gave him the sobriquet of ‘Your Royal Naughtiness’.”
Reportedly, William would repeatedly cause trouble before he was old enough to go to school. Ms Levin remarked: “William was such an energetic, noisy, unruly toddler that when he was six months old Olga Powell, then 52, was brought on board to be deputy nanny to Barnes [the first nanny].”
Harry’s christening was also a source of tension between some of the other family members.
Diana did not choose Princess Anne to be one of Harry’s six godparents, and so she did not turn up to the ceremony despite being the newborn’s aunt.

There was also the ongoing frictions between Diana and Charles as their marriage was already beginning to show cracks.
Ms Levin continued: “There was almost no interaction between her [Diana] and Prince Charles but at one point he brusquely told her, ‘He’s dribbling’, and she quickly wiped Prince Harry’s chin.”
The event became a sticking point for Diana, who “later revealed that even the joy of Harry’s christening was spoilt by Charles’s alleged tactlessness”.
The People’s Princess even told Andrew Morton during an interview in 1991: “Charles went to talk to my mother at Harry’s christening and said: ‘We were so disappointed – we thought it would be a girl.'”
Harry and Meghan appear increasingly stressed with life in the public eye, and it was recently revealed they will be taking a six-week sabbatical next month, as they are “burnt out” and “exhausted”.
