Royal rift: How Charles would ‘urge Harry and Meghan to soldier on’ amid public struggles
Meghan and Harry aired an ITV documentary at the weekend which revealed their emotional struggle with fame. Meghan even claimed her life in the public eye meant she was “existing not living” and condemned the British stiff upper-lip, dubbing it a “damaging” trait. The Duke of Sussex also publicly admitted that he and his brother are on “different paths” as rumours of a sibling rift continue to spread.
The broadcast was seen as a further snub to Prince William and Kate Middleton as it aired after their successful Pakistan tour. It has reportedly sent the Royal Family into a state of “panic” that they “may look out of touch”, according to The Sun’s Dan Wootton.
However, filmmaker John Bridcut told the Daily Mail in May how Charles has supported the Sussex family during their trying first year of marriage.
Mr Bridcut filmed the Royal Family over the course of the last year for a 60-minute special called ‘Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70’ in honour of the Prince of Wales’ birthday and so developed a close relationship with him.
When asked what kind of advice Charles would pass on to Harry and Meghan during this trying time, Mr Bridcut said: “I would have thought that his approach would be that you just carry on doing the job. He wouldn’t have added to that.
“His attitude would be that some of the attacks, he would feel were unfair.
“He would apply himself and just carry on doing the job and soldier on and that’s what he’s done and it’s borne fruit.”
Harry himself has previously emphasised how his family see their privileged position as a “duty” which they must fulfil.
The Prince of Wales himself was embroiled in scandal during his dramatic and prolonged separation from Princess Diana amid rumours of infidelity from both parties. His public image was severely damaged, especially after her tragic death.
Mr Bridcut admitted: “That difficult period after Diana’s death sort of coloured things for quite a while. I think what has changed is the perception that he (Charles) works incredibly hard at causes that a lot of people have come around to.”
The Daily Mail reported how Charles may have used what he learned from his own tricky marriage to advise the newlyweds, and by focusing on his charity work, he gradually changed how the public viewed him.
However, it is not just the Sussex marriage that is struggling in the limelight at the moment. Harry and William have fuelled rumours of a split ever since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in May 2018.
Writing in The Times in June, Sophia Money-Coutts said: “Charles is apparently ‘averse’ to getting involved with his sons’ relationship, so is staying out of it.”
Mr Bridcut even said in his Daily Mail interview: “[Charles] does not want to be seen as a sentimental or touchy feely, because I think that’s part of what he sees as his private life and his private existence.”

However, Charles did show his affection for Harry when he stepped in at the last minute to walk Meghan down the aisle for their May wedding last year.
The filmmaker also commented that “Harry has become a real champion of his father” – but in the meantime, reports of Harry’s and William’s feud are growing by the day.
In June, The Times quoted a former royal staffer who said: “The foundation’s the one to watch. If it doesn’t hold together, that’s a real sign there’s a problem.”
Harry and Meghan announced their split from William and Kate’s The Royal Foundation in the summer and said they will be setting up their trust called Sussex Royal, in an attempt to pursue their own humanitarian interests.
Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have tried to be increasingly independent away from ‘The Firm’ ever since they moved out of William and Kate’s place of residence, Kensington Palace.
The Sussex couple even asked the Queen if they could have their own separate household. However, the Queen refused, as the Royal Family is supposed to be a coordinated institution.
