Meghan Markle and Harry: Experts discuss ‘contradiction’

Meghan and Harry announced they planned to stop serving as frontline royals in January last year. Instead the couple pledged to become “financially independent” and to split their time between North America and Britain.

They currently live in California, Meghan’s home state, to the north of Los Angeles.

According to The Times royal aides believe Meghan and Harry will attend the Queen’s official birthday celebrations on June 12.

This occasion is usually celebrated with the trooping of the colour ceremony on Horse Guards Parade.

However due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 a greatly scaled down version took place in Windsor where the Queen spent the first national lockdown.

The last royal event Meghan and Harry appeared at was the 2020 Commonwealth Day Service in Westminster Abbey.

This took place at the end of March and was the Duke and Duchesses’ final engagement before stepping aside as senior royals.

Speaking to The Times a royal insider said the Queen’s 95th birthday will be both a “family occasion” and official event allowing the Sussexes’ to attend.

According to the Daily Mail Prince Harry had hoped to take part in the 2020 Remembrance Day commemoration at the Cenotaph but this was blocked by The Queen personally.

A source told the paper: “Remembrance Sunday is sacrosanct when it comes to Her Majesty’s diary.

“It’s one of the most important dates in her calendar and nothing is done without her knowledge.

“People were suggesting the Palace’s reaction to what Harry asked was petty.

“But it was the Queen’s decision. And what’s more, she actually had very strong views on the subject.”

A second insider added: “The Queen is very firmly of the opinion that you can’t pick and choose what you do when it comes to the institution, either you are in — or you are out.”

Harry, who served as a British soldier in Afghanistan, had allegedly been hoping to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph as part of the service.

Instead the Duke and Duchess were pictured laying flowers by the graves of Commonwealth soldiers at the Los Angeles National Ceremony.

The Queen’s official 95th birthday comes just two days after the 100th birthday of Prince Philip, her husband.

In 2020 a scaled back and socially distanced version of the parade took place at Windsor Castle.

The event featured a detachment of 1st Battalion Welsh Guards.

Speaking to The Times a royal aide commented: “The current plan is for the Queen’s birthday parade to go ahead in London as normal, with the acceptance that it may need to be adapted or scaled back depending on what guidelines are in force at the time.

“But the aspiration and the ultimate desire is to make it happen.”

Meghan and Harry agreed to stop using their HRH titles and drop their SussexRoyal brand before stepping down as working royals.

After moving to California they brought a £11.2m mansion in Santa Barbara where the couple currently live.
