Royal rebels: Warning as Meghan Markle and Harry ‘take swipe at traditional royal way’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed their worries and fears in the bombshell documentary aired earlier this month on ITV. Meghan, in her heartfelt interview with Tom Bradby, commented on the typically British “stiff upper lip”, saying she really tried to adopt it but she has realised it could be “damaging” on the long-run.

This comment has been seen as a swipe at how royals in the UK have been dealing with issues, following the Queen’s mantra ‘never complain, never explain’.

And, according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, it has also revealed the couple is quite unhappy with traditional royal roles.

He told Express.co.uk: “This comment by Meghan could however be seen as a swipe at the traditional royal way of doing things.

“However, conventional royal roles clearly make Harry and Meghan unhappy.

“It isn’t their style.”

This criticism and discontent, paired with relentless public attention, has pushed the Sussexes to speak up about their struggles and launch a legal case against the Mail on Sunday over a claim that it unlawfully published one of Meghan’s private letters.

Mr Fitzwilliams asked what would Meghan and Harry do if these latest and much-debated steps they took didn’t make their lives easier.

He continued: “The only problem is, if you abandon the stiff upper lip and you replace it with emotional appeals as well as legal action and you are still unhappy, what happens then?”

The Duchess of Sussex has received the unexpected support of 72 female MPs earlier this week.

The Labour MP for Halifax, Holly Lynch, led an open letter to Meghan to express “solidarity” over the media scrutiny and the publication of articles described as “often distasteful and [of] misleading nature”.

The full letter read: “As women MPs of all political persuasions, we wanted to express our solidarity with you in taking a stand against the often distasteful and misleading nature of the stories printed in a number of our national newspapers concerning you, your character and your family.

“On occasions, stories and headlines have represented an invasion of your privacy and have sought to cast aspersions about your character, without any good reason as far as we can see.

“Even more concerning still, we are calling out what can only be described as outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories.

“As women Members of Parliament from all backgrounds, we stand with you in saying it cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.”

Meghan appreciated the letter and phoned Ms Lynch to personally thank her, as the Labour MP revealed.

She said: “She was calling to thank myself and other women MP for standing with her and sending the open letter to say that we, as women in public office, absolutely understand what she is going through.

“Although in very different public roles, we stand with her in solidarity to say that we shouldn’t be tearing down women in public life through the press or otherwise, so she was pleased to have seen that letter.”

When asked what she discussed with the Duchess of Sussex, Ms Lynch said she and Meghan are both new mothers.

The MP said: “As a fairly new mum myself [I know] the challenges of both being in the public eye and managing childcare, managing public responsibilities… it can all be a challenge, so we discussed that.”
