Royal rebel: How Kate Middleton broke royal tradition on Charlotte’s first day at school

Earlier this month, Kate Middleton took her daughter Princess Charlotte to her first day off school, accompanied by Prince George and Prince William. While attending St Thomas’ school in Battersea, Kate wore a Michael Kors dress that cost just £150.50, paired with navy blue suede stilettos and silver hoop earrings. Christine Ross, Editor of royal fashion blog ‘Meghan’s Mirror’, claimed the Duchess of Cambridge broke from her usual tradition with one part of her outfit.

On whether Kate has worn a Michael Kors dress before, the royal fashion expert told Express.co.uk: “She had actually, I want to say it was on a tour of Australia when Prince George was a baby.

“She wore a blue coat from Michael Kors and we saw that coat one or two more times.

“So she has worn the brand before, but that was the runway line. This is kind of the first time we’ve seen her in the high-street version of it.

“If you can imagine, there’s six different Ralph Lauren lines and some of them are £40 and some of them are £4000.

“Michael Kors is the same where we saw a runway coat, this is the first time we’ve really seen her in a high-street dress.

“But the brand has really been embraced by a lot of modern royals throughout Europe, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Princess Victoria of Sweden, they’ve all worn the brand before.

“So it is favoured by royals but it’s the first time we’ve seen Kate in something from the Michael Kors high-street line.”

The pink dress, described as a “belted floral-print crepe midi dress”, sold out after Kate wore it to the school.

As the Cambridges walked from the car, Charlotte, normally much more confident than George, clung to Kate and held back. But she soon managed a wave.

The family was greeted by head of the lower school Helen Haslem, who shook hands with George and Charlotte.

Kate asked her: “How are you? Did you have a nice summer?”

Charlotte, who is fourth-in-line to the throne, has entered reception class and according to the school’s website will be charged almost two percent less than her brother George – who has entered year two.

The prestigious education centre offers a discount for any additional family members who attended the school.

The private school, rated outstanding by Ofsted, charges the eldest child who falls into the reception to year two bracket, £6,429 per term.

Kate Middleton’s style changed when she married into the Royal Family, according to Anthony McGrath, celebrity stylist and lecturer at the Fashion Retail Academy in London.

He previously told Express.co.uk: “As Kate transitioned to her role as the Duchess of Cambridge, her style inevitably evolved.

“Since Kate has been in the limelight she has always been somewhat of a conservative dresser.

“Whether that was because she wanted to prove herself to the Royal Family or was her own personal style, who knows, but she was rarely seen in anything too risqué.”
