The Queen loves Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps, former royal chef Darren McGrady told his followers on YouTube. Chef McGrady published a video to celebrate the 25,000 followers mark in which he answered questions from social media users about royals and what they like or hate to eat.

Asked by one YouTube user whether rumours the monarch loves Morecambe Bay Shrimps were true, Chef McGrady said: “That’s so true, the Queen does love Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps!

“If you don’t know what they are, they are little brown shrimps, obviously harvested from Morecambe Bay, and they are cooked and marinated in this secret spicy butter.

“The Queen, she would have it with warm toasts.”

Despite the monarch’s love for shellfish, royals are often discouraged from eating shrimps and other types of seafood that could give them food poisoning.

This royal rule, previously interpreted by some commentators as an all-round ban on shellfish, is usually followed when members of the Royal Family are carrying out visits and royal tours.

Ahead of Prince Philip and the Queen’s royal visit to Italy in autumn 2000, the BBC reported Buckingham Palace had banned any food that could upset the health of the senior royals, including shrimps and rare meat.

Former royal butler Grant Harold confirmed this rule is sensible when royals are on duty.

He had previously said: “It is a very sensible move to abandon having seafood when out and about on public duties.

“We don’t want a member of the Royal Family having a serious reaction to food poisoning, especially if she is on an overseas tour.”

The BBC also claimed the ban was imposed on spaghetti, tomato sauce and garlic.

DON’T MISS

While sauces and long pasta had been banned because they would have made it easier for the royals to get their outfits stained during an official meal, garlic is simply an ingredient the Queen can’t stand, as confirmed by Chef McGrady.

Asked by a YouTube user whether there are any foods the Royal Family doesn’t like, he said: “The Queen doesn’t like garlic, we could never use it at Buckingham Palace.”

Chef McGrady also opened up on his years at Buckingham Palace.

Revealing which is the major difference between being head of the kitchen at a hotel and cooking for the Queen, the chef said: “When I moved to Buckingham Palace it was more about cooking dishes that the Queen liked.

“You could do a Beef Stroganoff – if she didn’t like paprika in there then suddenly Beef Stroganoff became a dish that didn’t have paprika in.

“You’re just cooking for that one person, whereas in a hotel you’re cooking your food for all the different clients coming in.”

Chef McGrady worked for the Queen between 1982 and 1993.

On that year, he moved to another royal residence, Kensington Palace, where he cooked for Princess Diana, Prince Charles and their two sons Harry and William.

In another recent video shared on his YouTube channel, the former royal chef revealed Harry and William loved roast chicken thighs with mac and cheese.

And, like many other children, weren’t much fond of broccoli.

The chef said: “William and Harry loved this [the crispy chicken and mac and cheese] with shucked corn.

“But when the nanny was in the house she insisted ‘the boys must always eat their greens’.

“And so, she insisted that it was broccoli all the time.

“The boys, I guess like any boys, weren’t huge fans of broccoli, but what she said was ‘when you do the broccoli – I want you to have one piece of broccoli with each piece of chicken.

“So, the boys had to have the broccoli if they wanted to have the chicken.”
