The former England striker and BT sport regular felt “mortified” after putting his foot in his mouth with her Majesty during a day at the races. Mr Owen, who also owns a stable, divulged his encounter in his new book ‘Reboot’. He wrote: “When the Queen walked into the royal lift there were perhaps 15 of us outside.”

The football legend went on to explain how the Queen told them “come on, we can all squeeze in”.

He added: “I obeyed, taking my hat off as I thought that correct etiquette.

“‘’If you’d put your hat back on,’ she said, voice raised, ‘we might all fit in!’”

Mr Owen explained how he then “sheepishly” put his hat back on.

He added: “I was mortified. To this day I have absolutely no idea if she was joking.

“Louise was nudging me from the other side trying not to laugh because I’d been b****ked by the Queen.”

This isn’t the only time Mr Owen has had an encounter with the Queen.

In his new book, Mr Owen ­regaled a story where he attended a pre-race meal at Windsor Castle.

The ex-Liverpool star told how he tried to make sure his manners were impeccable.

He added: “I was careful to hold my fork in the correct hand and so on.

“I needn’t have worried. The Queen was throwing bits of starter to her corgis!”

The Queen is known for her cheeky sense of humour which can allow her to get out of awkward situations, claims a royal expert.

According Adam Helliker the Queen threw a lavish banquet for former French President Charles de Gaulle during an official state visit in the 1960s.

Mr Helliker told The Sun: “A guest asked Madame de Gaulle what she was most looking forward to in her retirement, which was imminent.

“With great elaboration, as she didn’t speak much English, she replied: ‘A penis.’

“An awkward silence ensued for some time, until the Queen herself came to the rescue, and she said with a broad grin: ‘Ah, happiness’.”

This anecdote is said to be one of Prince Philip’s favourite stories.

The Queen and her husband are believed to be sharing their keen sense of humour with each other, with the Duke of Edinburgh particularly keen on playing jokes at the monarch’s expenses.

According to a royal insider, he once hid one of the Queen’s beloved corgis to entertain their guests.

The source told Express.co.uk: “Philip hid a corgi in a desk cupboard and when the Queen asked him where it was, he said he didn’t know.”

But the prank backfired when the pet, hearing the Queen’s voice, started barking in a call for help.

The strength of their relationship, which has lasted for more than 70 years, is believed to be their ability to “laugh together”, according to a royal author.

On their 70th wedding anniversary, Royal biographer Ingrid Seward told ITV’s Loose Women: “I think the secret is they laugh together.”

She added: “I think the Queen is the comedian.”
