The Prince and Princess of Wales released a video of their time so far in the United States just moments before the trailer for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s docu-series with Netflix dropped online. The video, shared to Kate and Prince William’s Instagram account, shows the pair at a basketball game in Boston as they greeted Celtic player Ollie Perrault. The pair’s PR team wrote alongside the video: “Fantastic to celebrate the arrival of #EarthshotBoston2022 in the city and meet members of the community doing amazing things to protect and restore our planet. Last night’s @Celtics #HeroAmongUs, Ollie Perrault, fights for environmental justice, working to get more young people involved in climate action – and all this at 15 years old. Amazing work!”

The video came right before Netflix dropped the trailer for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s new show titled ‘Harry & Meghan’.

The trailer opens with one of the show’s producers asking: “Why do you want to make this documentary?”

Black and white photos then flash across the scene, with one showing the Duchess with her head in her hands.

The Duchess is seen wiping her eyes as she appears to cry.

Harry says “No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors… I had to do everything I could to protect my family”, while Meghan says, “When the stakes were this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”

The timing of the trailer’s release, coming a day before William and Kate are due to meet with US President Joe Biden to award the Earthshot prize, has not be lost on royal experts.

Royal editor for the Sunday Times Roya Nikkhah wrote on Twitter: “If the trailer is anything to go by, it is going to be quite a watch.”

While ITV News royal editor Chris Ship added: “With Harry’s brother and sister-in-law in the USA today and tomorrow and Prince William’s Earthshot Prize in Boston on Friday night, some might reasonably ask: ‘couldn’t they have waited a couple of days?’”

It comes as the Prince and Princess of Wales visit the US for three days in celebration of the Earthshot Prize Awards.

The visit marks the couple’s first time on US soil since William’s brother Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle moved to the country, leaving their royal duties behind them.

Crowds gathered at City Hall to cheer the couple as they arrive, equipped with flowers, flags and umbrellas to brave the heavy rain.

The royals were welcomed to City Hall by Ms Wu, the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants and the first Asian American to serve as Boston’s mayor.

Prince William issued a heartfelt thanks on social media for Boston’s “warm welcome” after the couple arrived in the US city for the start of their three-day tour.

He said they were “extremely grateful to Governor Baker and the First Lady of Massachusetts”, adding: “Catherine and I can’t wait to meet many of you in the days ahead.”

In a poignant moment, Prince William also acknowledged that the trip represents his first overseas since the death of his grandmother the Queen, and thanked “the people of Massachusetts and particularly of Boston” for their “tributes to the late Queen.”

President Joe Biden is also reportedly looking to meet the couple while they are in the country – although this has yet to be confirmed.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have travelled to Boston to visit a number of local associations supporting vulnerable people, see how the city is tackling the effects of climate change and learn more about the local approach to early childhood development.

The culmination of their trip will come on Friday, when they will lead the second award ceremony of the Earthshot Prize – to be aired by the BBC on Sunday at 5.30pm.

Launched by Prince William in October 2020, this decade-long initiative will award every year one £1million grant to each of the five winners presenting the best workable solutions to the most pressing issues planet earth faces – including climate change.
