The Queen’s funeral will take place in 10 or 11 days, until which time the UK will be in a period of national mourning. The day of the service could be declared a bank holiday leading many businesses to close, but there is no obligation to do so in the meantime. A number of sporting events and performances scheduled for the 24 hours after the Queen’s death have been cancelled, but life is expected to go on as normal through the weekend.

The Queen died yesterday afternoon at her Balmoral residence in Scotland.

The Government has announced a period of national mourning will last until the end of the day of the Queen’s state funeral, expected to be held in Westminster Abbey in 10 or 11 days’ time.

The day will be a National Day of Mourning, during which all sporting fixtures will be cancelled, the London Stock Exchange will close and many businesses will be expected to shut or change their operating hours.

Although it has not yet been confirmed, the day is also likely to be a bank holiday, in which case schools would also close.

Although a number of events planned for the days immediately after the Queen’s death have been cancelled, there is no obligation to deviate from normal life until the funeral.

The BBC Proms on Thursday and Friday were called-off, along with the Last Night of the Proms on Saturday.

There will also be no Premier League football matches over the weekend, as major cricket and golf tournaments were suspended on Friday.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew announced in a statement that it would not open on Friday “as a mark of respect”.

Shops such as Selfridges, French Connection and Liberty stayed closed on Friday, but are expected to resume business this weekend.

The Queen’s coffin will initially rest in St Giles’ Cathedral, before being flown to London where people will have the opportunity to file past for four days in Westminster Hall.

People can sign an online book of condolence on the Royal Family website, but no physical books will be placed at royal residences.

A memorial flower garden will be created in London’s Green Park on Saturday, and will become the officially designated place for laying flowers near Buckingham Palace.

Specific sites for flowers have also been set up close to Balmoral, Windsor and Sandringham, as well as at Hillsborough Castle in Belfast, the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and at Cardiff’s City Hall.
