The Queen removed Meghan and Harry’s military titles and royal patronages in February after they announced they were stepping down from their roles as working royals on March 31 last year. But Harry is still a prince and the couple also retain the titles Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Harry confirmed last week he had landed his first job away from the Royal Family as Chief Impact Officer at San Francisco-based BetterUp Inc.

The company announced the news by using his title of Prince Harry on their Instagram page, suggesting the Duke is not planning to stop using the moniker any time soon.

Despite cutting ties with the royals, Meghan was also announced as “Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex” when she was a guest speaker at the Girl Up Leadership Summit in July.

Over the last year, the couple has secured multimillion-pound deals with both Netflix and Spotify, set up their philanthropic Archewell foundation, and moved into an £11 million mansion in Montecito.

But Meghan and Harry’s most controversial move over the last 12 months was their two-hour televised interview with Oprah Winfrey at the start of this month, where they made a number of shocking allegations about the Royal Family.

Royal expert Penny Junor said Harry and Meghan’s accusations of racism and other allegations made in their explosive Oprah interview “lobbed a huge bomb into the heart of the institution”.

She said on the anniversary of Megxit: “When Harry and Meghan left a year ago people were surprised and disappointed because they were a great pair.

“Harry was a hugely popular royal and Meghan was a great asset to the family.

“A year on, I think a lot of people are really angry and think that they have betrayed their family and lobbed a huge bomb into the heart of the institution and sort of taken a swipe at the UK as well.”

During the interview, Meghan said an unnamed royal, which was later confirmed to not be the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh, raised concerns with Harry about how dark their son Archie’s skin tone might be before he was born.

Meghan also suggested her son Archie was not made a prince because of his race, even though rules set by George V meant he was not entitled to be one.

Oprah asked: “Do you think it’s because of his race? I know that’s a loaded question.”

Meghan replied: “I can give you an honest answer. In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we (had) the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title.

“And also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

The Duchess also said how she contemplated suicide but was not supported by the institution even when she begged for help.

Harry said in the interview that he felt “let down” by his father Prince Charles, before adding he was cut off financially by his family in the months before Megxit and also lost his taxpayer-funded security.

The interview was also aired while Harry’s grandfather 99-year-old Prince Philip was in hospital recovering from heart surgery.

The Queen later issued a statement saying that the issues raised would be dealt with privately as a family, but that “some recollections may vary”.

The Palace also assigned an external legal team with assisting its probe into bullying allegations made against Meghan around the time the interview was aired.

Since stepping down as a senior royal, Meghan will also no longer be patron of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of the royal family.

“Following conversations with the Duke, the Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the royal family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

“The honorary military appointments and royal patronages held by the Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of the Royal Family.”

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan responded with their own statement after their titles were stripped.

They said: “As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role.

“We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.”
