Royal poll: Express.co.uk readers reject ‘leftie lovey Charles’ for William – results

Prince William is the best-suited royal to become Britain’s next monarch, according to Express.co.uk readers. The Duke of Cambridge, 37, may be second in line to the throne after his 70-year-old father, but more than 60 percent of you thought he was the man for the job. Nearly 4,000 readers voted in the online poll – and dozens suggested one royal not on the list is the person best-suited to fill Queen Elizabeth II’s shoes.

The Prince of Wales suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of his son and won just 18 percent of the votes.

Prince William swiped a whopping 63 percent of the vote with readers feeling he would make a better king than his “liberal lovely father.”

In response to a comment about how Prince Charles will inevitably be the next king because of how succession works, one reader commented: “ah yes, Charles the king – AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH.”

Another put: “The last two Charles’s were not much good.”

While a third chimed in: “I agree he is a liberal lovey.”

The results show that most readers would reject Charles in favour of Prince William with some commenting on how his wife, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge would make a fine Queen consort.

One wrote: “Our regal Catherine, future Queen Consort. Prince William, you did very well.

“Thank God for you both. Her Majesty must be well pleased.”

However, there was one royal who wasn’t included in the poll that plenty of readers put forward in the comments.

While Queen Elizabeth’s daughter, Princess Anne, is not in the immediate line of succession, many of you felt she is the best person for the job.

One reader put: “Princess Anne, then Prince William.”

While another wrote: “Princess Anne, the hardest working of the lot (apart from her parents).”

A third suggested: “Try adding Princess Anne and see that she is very popular.”

In third place after Prince William and Charles, was Prince Harry with a relatively small portion of the vote – just 8%.

There were some surprising votes for the youngest royals with Princess Charlotte proving the most popular pick among the Cambridge clan.

Charlotte won 129 votes compared to the 73 gained by her big brother George.

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor received more votes than his older cousin Prince Louis, who is higher up the line of succession.

It seems Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s only son was a more popular choice than Prince William and Kate’s youngest.

While Princess Eugenie is the younger of Prince Andrew’s and Sarah Ferguson’s two daughters she received more votes than her sister Beatrice.

Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding last year may have helped win her more public support.
