Royal Navy warships arrive at waterfront in stunning scenes

The Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Halifax and the Danish Navy’s HDMS Absalon reached Liverpool’s cruise terminal on Wednesday afternoon. It is believed trhey are on their way to a Nato Exercise, Joint Warrior.

According to the Royal Navy, the exercise involves 16 warships and brings together vessels from all over the world.

Liverpool Echo reports Joint Warrior takes place in the spring and autumn each year, spanning the course of two weeks.

“Exercise Joint Warrior is the largest military exercise in Europe, bringing together the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the British Army, as well as forces from other nations,” the Royal Navy said.

“The Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and British Army are joined by forces from 13 other nations, including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Turkey, Japan, UAE and the US.

“Taking place over two weeks, Joint Warrior includes airborne assaults, amphibious landings, evacuations and live-fire exercises.

“The exercise runs through a range of scenarios, including crisis and conflict situations, that could be realistically encountered in operations, such as territory disputes, terrorist activity and piracy.”

The ships’ silhouettes have dominated Liverpool’s skyline since their arrival. 

Residents shared their excitement online.

“That’ll be a nice trip out,” one local posted online.

“I’ll have a walk and see them,” added another.

The Royal Navy added: “The exercise doesn’t only allow participating units to hone their specialist roles within a larger war-style setting – it also helps foster vital links between the UK, NATO and other allied militaries.”
