Coronavirus has cancelled events and celebrations for everyone, including the Royal family. Several key events in the Royal calendar have been changed or cancelled altogether whilst the Royals stay at home alongside the rest of Britain.

This week is particularly poignant for the Queen and Kate Middleton, who are missing out on some of their favourite Royal engagements.

Her Majesty should have been taking part in The Ceremony of the Keys on June 29.

In the special ceremony, the Queen is officially welcomed to Edinburgh by the Lord Provost, who offers her the keys to the city, dubbed the “ancient and hereditary kingdom of Scotland”.

In normal times the ceremony would take place on the forecourt of the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, marking the start of Holyrood Week, but has unfortunately been cancelled.

As part of the occasion, Royals would take part in a variety of official engagements throughout the week.

When the Queen attended last year, she wore a sunshine yellow coat dress and was presented with a posy of flowers alongside the keys.

She also inspected the Scots Guards and was pictured patting a guide dog on the nose.

For her granddaughter-in-law Kate Middleton, today should have been the start of Wimbledon.

The Duchess of Cambridge is a regular at Wimbledon, which takes place every June through to July.

Instead, Kate marked the day by helping create a video for Wimbledon’s official Instagram account.

The Duchess provided the voice over for a minute-long video in which she promised

Kate is an avid tennis fan and patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and is a regular fixture at the two-week-long tournament, so there is no doubt she will be regretting the cancellation of the event.

Wimbledon, like all other major events, has been cancelled for the first time since the Second World War due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the voiceover, Kate says: “350 days, 14 hours and 12 minutes between the last ball hit and when the next was meant to be.

“Over the years your support has shaped this historic event. No matter the time of day or the names on the scoreboard, you have always been there, come rain or shine.

“This year sadly though things are very different, but we will bide our time until we sit on the edge of our seats again and celebrate again.

“So, when the time is right and we open the gates, we will be back again and it will have been worth the wait.”

Kate was last pictured at Wimbledon enjoying the games with Meghan Markle and had their first joint appearance together at the tournament in 2018.

They watched one of Meghan’s closest friends Serena Williams play on Centre Court from the Royal box.

The Duchess of Cambridge presents the prizes at the annual tournament after becoming a patron of the AELTC in 2016, taking over from the Queen, who had held the role for 64 years.

Kate has been spending lockdown with her husband Prince William and their three children at Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

She has recently resumed some in-person Royal duties, including visiting a recently reopened garden centre near her home.
