Royal heartbreak: The shocking moment Charles shunned Diana when she needed him most

Such was the low point of their relationship that one royal expert has revealed the extreme lengths Diana went to try and gain Charles’ attention. Writing in her book, The Queen and Di: The Untold Story, royal expert Ingrid Seward has recounted a moment at Sandringham which “stunned” onlookers. According to Ms Seward, early in their marriage, Diana once threw herself in front of Charles’ car to stop him from leaving.

Ms Seward adds: “Diana wrenched at the car and then threw herself, first on to the bonnet of the car, then finally on to the gravel, crying and pleading: ‘If you love me you won’t leave me, you won’t go’.”

The event all focused on Charles departing to attend a royal event.

Although extreme, Diana’s actions, unfortunately, did not provoke thew action from her husband that she wanted.

Unaffected by his wife, Charles, according to Ms Seward drove off in his car.

Pointing to the fact that Diana was in her own way, desperate for attention, Ms Seward insisted that such was her need for it, that it “embarrassing”.

Ms Seward added: “Diana needed attention in much the same way a drowning man needs air, and she pushed aside the restraints of both common sense and court protocols in her frantic attempts to get it.

“She demanded it of her husband, sometimes to an embarrassing extent.”

Ms Seward also revealed that Diana herself would later describe the scenes as a “desperate cry” for help, although Charles saw it differently.

Unfortunately for Diana, Charles was not the only one whom she had an estranged relationship with.

According to Ms Seward, Diana and her mother, Frances Shand Kydd rarely spoke according to the Princess.

As Diana once told the biographer: “‘I don’t tell her anything – ever’.”

Moreover, a friend of Mrs Shand Kidd once observed: “‘Their relationship was based on love but love and hate run very close together’.”
