As he is directly in line for the throne, Prince George is likely to receive a new royal title at some point in the future. Members of the Royal Family are often awarded new royal titles by the Queen upon their wedding days. While it is not currently clear just what royal title Prince George will be given one day, it is unlikely to ever be one royal dukedom in particular.

There are currently a number of royal dukedoms in circulation, and each title includes subsidiary titles which are used when the holder visits Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Prince Charles holds the title of Prince of Wales, but also the title of Duke of Cornwall.

Prince Philip holds the prestigious title of Duke of Edinburgh, as the husband of the Queen.

In the order of precedence, Prince William’s Duke of Cambridge title is also very significant.

Following William is Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, then Prince Andrew, Duke of York.

Other royals who hold royal dukedoms are Prince Richard, who is Duke of Gloucester, and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.

The Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward has a royal earldom, which is of lower rank than a dukedom, but Edward is said to have chosen this himself.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie are known as the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

A number of other royal dukedoms are currently extinct, including the title of Duke of Windsor.

Following the abdication crisis of 1936, a new title was created by King George VI for the ex-King, Edward VIII.

Edward abdicated due to the backlash his proposed marriage caused amongst the public and the Church of England.

Edward had fallen in love with the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson, who many at the time deemed unsuitable for the wife of a king.

After the abdication, Edward and his wife Wallis were known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor for the rest of their lives, although Wallis was never given the title of Her Royal Highness (HRH), much to Edward’s chagrin.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said Edward VIII’s legacy had impacted on the Duke of Windsor title, and it is unlikely to ever be used again.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “The Dukedom of Windsor is unlikely ever to be used again as it will forever be identified with the Queen’s uncle, who abdicated in 1936 to marry the twice-divorced Wallis Simpson.

“His public reputation was for a while that of the King who gave up his throne for love, but in recent decades his reputation has become that of a King to whom patriotism and duty meant nothing, as well as a fascist sympathiser.

“His selfishness has become his epitaph.”

While Prince George is unlikely to ever become the Duke of Windsor, it is not certain which royal title he will receive in the future.

It is also unlikely any other royal, such as Prince George’s younger brother Louis, will ever receive the title either.

George’s royal title will depend on who is on the throne at the time of his marriage.

If Prince Charles is King by the time George marries, he could appoint Prince William as Prince of Wales, leaving William’s Duke of Cambridge title vacant for George to take on.

But if William is King, George may just be known as the Prince of Wales and subsequently the Duke of Cornwall, as Prince Charles has been known for most of his life.
