Royal heartbreak: Princess Martha Louise’s emotional tribute to ex-husband Ari Behn

Norwegian Princess Martha Louise, 48, has shared an emotional tribute to her ex-husband Ari Behn, who took his own life on Christmas Day, aged 47. The couple, who divorced in 2017, shared three daughters together.

In a heartbreaking letter, published in Norwegian paper VG, Princess Martha Louise wrote: “Dear Ari,

“We were supposed to be together and celebrate Christmas this year. We had all been looking forward to it.

“We are so sad and heartbroken over the loss of just you, because you were the girls’ warm, funny, wise and good dad that they so dearly miss.

“We miss the funny comments, your lovely viewpoints, the poetic undertone, the overflowing compliments, the great love you had for them.

“But now there is a void where you were, because no one can ever replace you for our beautiful girls.

“And it is so painful to think that you would want to leave Earth. We are all in deep sorrow and pain.

“The invisible illness took over more and more, and it greatly affected your mental health.

“For a long time, we gradually saw you disappear, but we held on to the belief that this would all be okay.

“Your family fought for you. They were there for you day and night.

“You are and will continue to be deeply missed, Ari.

“And I feel sad you never really understood how loved you were.

“I hope those of us who are left can be good to each other, praise each other and say nice words to each other.

“Because we have this life to share just how much we are about each other and what wonderful qualities we see in each other.

“We love you, Ari, and move on with your words: Every day is a party and you are a piece of jewellery. ”

Martha and Ari married in 2002 and divorced in 2017 and shared three daughters together Maud Angelica, 16, Leah Isadora, 14, and Emma Tallulah, 10.

His funeral took place on Friday, January 3 in Oslo, where members of the Norwegian Royal Family invited the public to attend.

Ari had long suffered mental health issues and his suicide was confirmed by his manager.

Geir Hakonsund, Ari’s manager, said on behalf of his family on Christmas Day: “It is with sadness in our hearts that we, the closest relatives of Ari Behn, announce today that he has taken his life.

“We ask for respect for our privacy in the coming time.”

In a statement the same day, King Harald of Norway said: “It is with great sadness that the Queen and I have received the message of Ari Behn’s passing.

“Ari has been an important part of our family for many years, and we carry warm, fond memories of him.

“We are grateful that we got to know him. We grieve that our grandchildren have now lost their dear father, and have deep compassion for his parents and siblings, who now have lost their dear son and brother.

“We ask that Ari’s immediate family get some rest during this difficult time.”
