Royal heartbreak: Prince William delivers emotional outburst against ‘the enemy’ on tour
The Duke of Cambridge joined a team of litter pickers, as they walked the shore of Persian Gulf mudflats following a trail of plastic bottles, discarded packaging and carrier bags washed up by the sea. The Prince told his companions: “We’ve made sure we are travelling here we only take our metal bottles with us. Lots of metal bottles.
“I hate plastic bottles now and I look at them and I literally think it’s the enemy.
“You see a plastic bottle and I’m like ‘eugh!’ Horrible isn’t it?”
The Jahra Nature Reserve attracts hundreds of species of migratory birds, as they crisscross the globe between their winter and summer habitats.
It also provides permanent homes for a whole variety of different bird species.
Dr Abdullah Alzaidan, director general of technical affairs for the Environment Public Authority, which manages the reserve, said: “We have four ecosystems here – salt marsh, freshwater, marine and coastal systems.
“We are trying to raise awareness about what we have.
“The young people here are taking responsibility for combating the pollution, 10 to 15 years ago we would have had a couple of volunteer teams – now there are tens of groups.”
Prince William got a chance to view some of the numerous bird species, when he visited a a bird hide.

He scoured the surrounding countryside with a pair of binoculars, hoping to glimpse flamingoes and greater spotted eagles.
After his visit to the nature reserve, William met the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, at the Bayan Palace for lunch.
Lunch was followed by a tour of the recently established Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre.
Here the Duke was told about how the museum tries to educate and engage young Kuwaitis in innovative ways across a range of areas, from space exploration and robotics to natural history and human biology.

In the evening William attended an event hosted by Sheikh Mohamed Abdullah in the desert.
The Duke met a number of young Kuwaitis including university students, young leaders and entrepreneurs.
William’s interest and concern for the environment was instilled into him at a very early age by his father, Prince Charles.
The future king devised an unusual way to help his sons understand the importance of protecting the planet.
He used to take William and Harry on litter picking expeditions during school holidays.
In the documentary, Prince Charles at 70, both Prince William and Prince Harry spoke about their dad’s unusual methods.
The Duke of Cambridge explained: “He took us litter picking when we were younger, on holiday.
“We were in Norfolk on school holidays, and we went out litter picking with him.
“We thought this is perfectly normal, everyone must do it. We were there with our spikes stabbing the rubbish into black plastic bags.”
