Royal heartbreak: Prince Harry and William were ‘a genuine double act’ before feud

Prince Harry and his brother William were known to be very close to one another as they grew up following the untimely and tragic death of Princess Diana. However, tensions between the brothers arose a few months into Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s relationship, according to the biography Finding Freedom.

The feud that followed set the brothers on different paths, according to royal biographer Andrew Morton.

Despite the paths Harry and William are now on, the author of Princess Diana’s tell-all book described with sadness the wound left by the feud.

He told Australian magazine’s New Idea: “Everyone inside the Royal Family knows William and Harry have gone their separate ways.

“But you don’t want these two to be at loggerheads for the next 50 years.

“There’s no value for the monarchy.

“William and Harry were a genuine double act.

“It’s just a very sad situation.”

The rift between Harry and William is also believed to be a saddening matter for Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, who was very close to her brother-in-law.

Mr Morton said: “There’s no doubt the rift between Harry and William has deeply affected Kate.

“It upsets her. There’s spilt blood on both sides.

“It’s very sad they didn’t get on particularly well but that was compounded by the growing rift.”

Speculation regarding a rift between the Sussexes and the Cambridges started to be reported in late 2018, when Meghan and Harry announced their intention to move out of the Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace and relocate to Windsor.

The Sussexes completed their split from Kate and William in the spring of 2019, when they announced they would leave the Royal Foundation to create the Sussex Royal Foundation.

Buckingham Palace also announced Meghan and Harry would have their own communication team based at the Queen’s palace rather than share Kensington Palace’s spokespeople with the Cambridges.

Royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claimed in Finding Freedom Meghan and Harry escaped to Windsor to be far from palace aides.

In their biography, the authors also spoke of the growing tensions between the brothers.

Sources expressed Prince Harry’s annoyance at his brother as William told him to take time to get to know Meghan as their romance was quickly progressing.

An extract from the book published by The Times read: “’Don’t feel you need to rush this,’” William told Harry, according to sources.

“’Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl’.”

“In those last two words, “this girl”, Harry heard the tone of snobbishness that was anathema to his approach to the world.

“During his 10-year career in the military, outside the royal bubble, he had learnt not to make snap judgments about people based on their accent, education, ethnicity, class or profession.

“Also, to remove Meghan from the equation, Harry was tired of the dynamic that had become established between him and his older brother.”

The brothers are believed to be on speaking terms at the moment – but their relationship is not what it used to be, according to royal author Phil Dampier.

He told the Australian magazine: “I’m told that the pair are speaking at the moment, but the conversations are stilted and difficult.”
