Princes William and Harry stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the unveiling of Princess Diana’s statue earlier this month. While the two tried to put a united front to honour their mother’s 60th birthday, the brothers did not seem to engage too much with one another. The meeting came after Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, unleashed a string of explosive claims against the Royal Family in an interview with Oprah – including that the Duchess had faced racism and was not supported when she struggled with her mental health.

The Duke of Sussex also admitted during the interview that the relationship between him and his brother is now “space”.

He said: “As I said before, I love William to bits.

“We’ve been through hell together and we have a shared experience, but we are on different paths.”

While looking visibly shaken, the Duke added: “The relationship is ‘space’ at the moment

“And time heals all things, hopefully.”

Earlier in the conversation, Prince Harry expressed how he felt for not only his brother, but also his father Prince Charles, and how he views their roles as kings-in-waiting as a “trapped” role within the institution of the monarchy.

He said: “It’s a part of the role. That’s what’s expected, no matter who you are in the family, no matter what’s going on in your personal life, no matter what’s just happened.

“My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave [their roles].

“And I have huge compassion for that.”

Many royal fans were saddened by Harry’s comments as he used to be incredibly close to his brother.

In 2012, a confidante told the Daily Mail the two brothers thought they would work together for the rest of their lives.

The source said: “William and Harry know that when they join forces it has a great effect.

“They honestly believe they can make a difference working as a team and want to stay together as a team for the rest of their lives.

“It may sound a very grand thing to state, but it is something they themselves would say.

“They set the foundation up together. It’s a joint effort and very much a sign of the way they intend things to work in the future.”

In June 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to split from the joint charity.

Less than 18 months after the couple appeared together at a Royal Foundation forum with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the first and ultimately final time, it was announced that Prince Harry and Meghan were to forge their own path.

Harry recently announced he will share “mistakes and lessons learned” during his life in a memoir due to be published next year.

As he disclosed the deal with publishers Penguin Random House, Prince Harry said he would reflect “the highs and lows” and be “accurate and wholly truthful”.

Harry, who alongside his wife Meghan stepped back from royal duties and relocated to California, US, will donate proceeds to charity.

The Duke said in a statement: “I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become.

“I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.

“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a first-hand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful.”
