Royal health update: Princess ‘broke tailbone’ in skiing accident ahead of Christmas

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, 47, broke suffered a nasty skiing injury in the lead up to Christmas, a local news outlet has claimed. According to Norwegian magazine “Se og Hør”, the royal broke her coccyx (tailbone) while skiing a few days before Christmas Eve.

While Norway’s Royal Court has not confirmed the news, the princess is understood to have spent a night in hospital following the injury.

According to reports, the royal was with her daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra at the time of the accident.

The magazine report claims the accident came about after the Crown Princess’s skis became entangled causing her to lose her balance and fall to the ground.

The princess was rushed to hospital following the incident and is understood to have spent the night there.

The accident is reported to have happened during the Royal Family’s stay at their private cabin in Uvdal.

The Crown Prince’s family spent time at the ski resort before going home to Skaugum to celebrate Christmas.

On January 5, several Norwegian news outlets asked the Royal Court for comment but its Head of Communications said they did not wish to comment on the matter.

The princess is understood to be recovering well following the accident.

Who is Crown Princess Mette-Marit?

Crown Princess Mette-Marit is the wife of Crown Prince Haakon, heir apparent to the throne of Norway.

A Norwegian commoner and single mother, she was a controversial figure at the time of her engagement to Haakon in 2000.

Mette-Marit and Prince Haakon have two children together – Princess Ingrid Alexandra, born January 21, 2004, and Prince Sverre Magnus, born December 3 2005.

In 2018, the Crown Princess was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that affects the lungs over time.

After the Royal House announced her diagnosis, it was revealed that Mette-Marit’s official engagements would be dependent on her health and medical treatment.

Health fears for the princess were fuelled last week after she was absent from a visit King Harald, Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon made to Gjerdrum following a catastrophic landslide.

However, it is now thought the Crown Princess was not present due to the fracture of her tailbone.
