Republic campaigns for the monarchy to be abolished and the to Queen be replaced with an elected, democratic head of state. Graham Smith, the organisation’s CEO told Express.co.uk that the cost is just one symptom of why the UK should get rid of the monarchy.

Mr Smith said: “The cost is one symptom of why the monarchy should be abolished.

“They get away with it because it is unaccountable.

“No one can get rid of them as individuals, they have to get rid of the whole institution.

“They get away with it because they are secretive and do not reveal the information about money being spent and what they are getting up to behind closed doors.

“We are supposed to be a democracy, we have argued about democracy and the will of the people for the last four years.

“We then don’t turn that same logic to the monarchy.

“So, it does not live up to the standards that we should expect of an institution in this country in this day and age.”

During the same interview, the CEO of Republic also slammed Kate and Prince William for their “outrageous” spending.

Graham Smith discussed reports that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent £15,000 on a 950ft hedge to block the public from peering into their property.

Mr Smith stated that this is an outrageous amount of money and that the royal couple should accept the fact they have a really privileged lifestyle.

Mr Smith said: “It is typical of the royals to spend this type of money because all they think about is their own lifestyles.

“They have a deep-seated sense of entitlement.

“They routinely spend money in the tens of thousands whether it is on their own homes or private plane and helicopter travel around the UK when they could easily take cars or trains.

“So this is typical of more of their spending.”

He added: If this is public money, this is an outrageous use of public money, 15,000 is more than people earn in a year.

“They ought to accept the fact they have a really privileged life and not keep spending public money.”

Of the Daily Mail reports on the £15,000 hedge, a Palace spokesperson said: “As part of the broader management of the Estate, the physical surroundings of Royal Residences are under constant review. From time to time, adjustments are made to the landscaping and gardens, including hedging.”
