Royal Family ‘won’t like’ upcoming Diana biopic – expert

William and Harry: Expert discusses Diana statue

Played by Kristen Stewart, the film Spencer will centre on Princess Diana’s rapidly deteriorating marriage to Prince Charles over Christmas at Sandringham in 1991. The film from director Pablo Larrain is a similar genre of cinema to his highly successful film 2016 Jackie highly successful film which depicted the weeks Jackie Kennedy’s life following the death of her husband.

The royals have already dealt with the fourth series of Netflix original The Crown in 2021, which was widely interpreted as a negative portrait of the Royal Family’s relationship with Princess Diana.

Netflix even had to reject calls to add a disclaimer to the show to make it clear that the lavish drama is not a documentary.

A statement from the streaming giant said: “We have always presented ‘The Crown’ as a drama — and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events.

“As a result we have no plans — and see no need — to add a disclaimer.”

The Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden and Princess Diana’s late brother also called for a disclaimer to be added.

Charles Spencer said: “I think it would help ‘The Crown’ an enormous amount if, at the beginning of each episode, it stated that ‘this isn’t true but it is based around some real events.

“I worry people do think that this is gospel, and that’s unfair.”

Now it appears the royals are going to be even further dissatisfied with the upcoming film, according to one royal expert.

Royal author and journalist Robert Jobson said the royals are unlikely to be fans of the interpretation.

He told US Weekly: “They won’t like it, but they would have expected it. It is the truth.”

He continued: “I think the most important thing is how well the actress can interpret the role. We’ll have to wait and see on that.

“As for the photographs of her, I thought she looked remarkably like the photograph of [Diana].

“Having been someone who has met Diana and knew her fairly well, I thought it was uncanny, really.

“But we’ll just have to see.

“I think what’s more important is the authenticity of the portrayal, and we’ll have to see how that develops because my understanding is it’s going to be a good script and it’s going to be a good premise, but it might not necessarily have actually happened in the way they’re saying.”

Kristen Stewart, who is most well known for her performance in the Twilight series, explained how she wants to make sure she does the best job she can of depicting the late Princess.

She said: “It’s hard not to feel protective over her.

“She was so young [when she died]. Everyone’s perspective is different, and there’s no way to get everything right … what is fact in relation to personal experience.”

The first images of Ms Stewart in the role were released this month, with many praising the actor’s likeness.

Spencer does not yet have a release date.
