The Firm’s festive plans are reported to have taken an unfortunate turn for the second consecutive year as concerns over COVID-19 have forced the palace to host Christmas celebrations at Windsor Castle. The Queen, 95, spent last year at her Berkshire home with her late husband Prince Philip, who died in April aged 99, as the Royal Family spent the holiday season apart for the first time in almost thirty years.

Despite concerns over the coronavirus, a royal expert claimed the Firm will not allow the Queen to spend her first Christmas without the Duke of Edinburgh on her own.

Appearing on Royal Beat’s recent episode for True Royalty TV, Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent Katie Nicholl said: “The idea that the Queen will be on her own for Christmas without Philip I simply cannot believe the family will allow to happen.”

“I don’t think it will happen,” she added.

During her appearance on Royal Beat, which also included royal biographer Ingrid Seward, the expert discussed whether Prince Andrew, 61, and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, 62, could attend the Firm’s festive celebrations.

Ms Nicholl said: “Andrew will be there.

Ms Seward added: “Andrew will definitely be there, he is always at the Queen’s side.”

Responding with affirmation, Ms Nicholl then said: “Maybe now Philip’s not there Fergie will be too.”

Fergie usually spends Christmas away from the royals, including her daughter’s Princess Beatrice, 33, and Princess Eugenie, 31.

Speaking to the Mail about celebrating Christmas without her daughter’s in 2018, she said: “I will watch Ben-Hur and really enjoy it, then watch the news and see how the girls are doing.”

The Duchess of York, who lives with Andrew at the Royal Lodge despite divorcing the Prince in 1996, added: “I know that Her Majesty adores my children, so I am happy to share them — both in August and at Christmas.”

However, the decision to stay at Windsor also ensured Her Majesty celebrated Christmas away from Sandringham, a tradition which has been in place since 1988.

The news the royals have been hit by a second Covid-affected Christmas comes just days after it emerged the Queen cancelled a traditional pre-Christmas lunch with extended members of the Royal Family.

The Queen, who made an overnight visit to a London hospital before suffering from a back sprain in the autumn, also missed a church service at Windsor on Sunday.
