Royal editor Rob Jobson sympathised with Prince Harry and Andrew who are reported to want to wear military uniforms at Prince Philip’s funeral but have been denied. Mr Jobson added tensions should be “set aside” for the event and the pair should wear whatever they believe is fitting for the event. Prince Andrew withdrew from royal duties in 2019 and is not allowed to don his military uniform but is reportedly fighting against it – meanwhile, Harry lost his military titles earlier this year meaning he can not wear ceremonial military clothes.

Speaking on Nick Ferrari’s morning show on LBC, host Ferrari asked Mr Jobson: “Every day a fresh story about what might or might not be happening at that funeral on Saturday.

“One of the ones that catches the eye today is the possibility of whether or not the Duke of York should wear the uniform of I think an Admiral, Robert?”

Prince Andrew was due to be made an Admiral before his 60th birthday but issues surrounding his relationship with billionaire Jeffrey Epstein meant the decision was deferred.

The prince is now demanding to wear the Admiral uniform at his father’s funeral.

Mr Jobson replied: “He was due to be made higher up that rank. This particular moment as such, things should be set aside personally.

“I think actually that both Harry and the Duke served with distinction in the Falklands War and the Afghanistan War and they should be able to wear whatever uniform is fitting for their father and grandfather’s funeral.”

Mr Ferrari also asked whether Prince Harry would hang around after the funeral or would he go straight back to America.

He said: “Do we know, once the Duke of Sussex attends the funeral, is it likely that he’ll want to get back immediately to be with the Duchess or do we know if he might try and hang on for a couple of days to be around his grandmother?”

The royal expert responded: “We don’t know but we understand that he hasn’t bought his ticket back yet.

“So, sometimes we will know family funerals are tense anyway in any family.

“And I hope somewhere there’s a hope for reconciliations but they just don’t happen – let’s hope they can resolve their issues.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were stripped of their honorary titles earlier this year as part of their “Megxit” agreement.

The royal couple were given a year cooling-off period which allowed them to come back to the Royal Family if they changed their minds.

However, Harry confirmed he would not return and so was stripped of his honorary titles – including his inherited military titles.

As such, he will not be allowed to wear a ceremonial uniform for Prince Philip’s funeral.

Prince Philip’s funeral will be held on April 17 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Only 30 family members are allowed to attend due to coronavirus restrictions as Buckingham Palace urges the public to stay away.

Prince Charles and William are expected to walk behind the car which will be accompanied by a small military parade as it makes its way to the chapel.

Royal Family members are also expected to wear masks during the event.
