The Royal Family has undergone significant change in recent years with the death of Prince Philip in April 2021 and the seismic decision by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to step down from their roles. Author Stewart Pearce, an intimate friend of Princess Diana, suggested more change is on the line as royal aides prepare for the disappearance of the “old regime” the Queen and older family members represent. Asked about what changes the Royal Family needs to take on, the expert told US Weekly’s podcast Royally Us: “The simple word is education.

“And I feel that’s really what’s happening now because, with the demise of Prince Philip, the old regime is beginning to alter, it’s beginning to dissolve.

“The Queen is so strong, look at her at the G7, she seems indefatigable so when the Queen goes there’s going to be a huge regime change.

“I would suggest that right now, particularly because of the strike of liberation Harry and Meghan have made, what’s happening is the interior mechanism of the Royal Family, the men in grey suits, are actually now in discussion about what is this to become.

“They’ll be making a point of definition about their own hierarchy of values.”

Mr Pearce added: “And it is going to change completely as we’ve seen with some of the other European households.”

Speculation has been rife about Prince Charles looking to create a more streamlined system and reduce the number of working Royal Family members.

The Queen appeared to give a glimpse into the new make-up of the royal team at Christmas as she reunited the family for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

Prince Charles and wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall took centre stage alongside Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Princess Anne, long considered to be among the hardest-working members of the family, and younger brother Prince Edward with his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex completed what has been dubbed as the “magnificent seven” team.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were the first members to resume public duties when the first lockdown and played a prominent supporting role at the G7 Summit, where they appeared alongside the Queen and the Cambridges.

William and Kate also increased their workload, with the couple launching a flash visit across the UK ahead of Christmas before a week-long stay in Scotland in May as the Duke of Cambridge was appointed the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Prince Edward and Sophie have also appeared in public more often in recent months, with the couple leading efforts for the commemoration of Prince Philip’s in the run-up to what would have been the Duke of Edinburgh’s 100th birthday earlier this month.

The Countess of Wessex welcomed the increased interest the departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sparked in her as she suggested the publicity would help raise awareness of her supported charities.

Speaking to the BBC earlier this week, Sophie said: “There is increased interest in us as a family but, if it raises more awareness of the issues I care about, then that can only be a good thing.”
