Royal Family ‘secret’ exposed as expert details Palace’s embarrassing Camilla blunder

Another favourite in the royal calendar has fallen victim to the UK lockdown with the Chelsea Flower Show going virtual this year. However, the Royal Family still managed to celebrate the event as various members revealed their favourite plants. ITV News Royal Editor Chris Ship and Producer Lizzie Robinson revealed a major blunder to do with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, on their Royal Rota podcast.

The Duchess had revealed her favourite plant as the Alchemilla Mollis, also known as Garden Lady’s-mantle.

She said: “This acid green fluffy-flowered plant is one of the best-ever foliage plants for the garden and the vase. A must for every gardener.”

Mr Ship told listeners: “We shouldn’t give away too many secrets, but one of the first emails we got from one of the Palaces had that Alchemilla Mollis spelt wrong.

“They had to issue a correction.”

The royals have attended the garden show every year since the Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary, first went in the 1910s.

The Queen is patron, and sent her best wishes to the event.

She also said about how pleased she was to hear they were offering gardening advice and virtual sessions for people.

Buckingham Palace revealed that Lily of the Valley is one of the Queen’s most-loved blooms.

The flowers featured in her coronation bouquet, so they hold particularly special memories for the monarch.

They are also grown in the Buckingham Palace grounds.

Prince Charles revealed his own: “For me, the magnificent, gloriously apparelled Delphinium, with its impeccable bearing and massed in platoons, holds pride of place in my botanical affections.”

Princess Anne selected Hellebores, as “not only do they flower early but they keep flowering for two months, and they are often beautifully marked with endless variations”.

Both Prince Edward and his wife Sophie chose Azaleas as their favourite flower, because they are “so breathtaking at this time of year and have the most intoxicating scent”.

The Duchess of Gloucester revealed that the sweet pea was her favourite plant.

While the Duke of Gloucester chose daisies as his favourite, explaining that he “enjoys digging up from between the paving stones and transferring elsewhere to grow properly and healthily”.

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William have not revealed their own.
