Royal family news: The nine most touching nicknames used by the Royal Family

Like any ordinary family, the Royal Family use particular endearing nicknames to refer to one another. While they are beacons of gentility in public, in private pet names are used in abundance. Express.co.uk has put together a list of the most touching nicknames bandied around the table at Buckingham Palace.

Mike Tindall’s nickname for Zara TIndall: Zoey

Famous former rugby player Mike Tindall revealed a little known nickname he has for his wife Zara Tindall, the daughter of Princess Anne last week.

While on a podcast with Alex Payne and James Haskell where he engaged in a game of Would you rather, the sportsman revealed he calls Zara, Zoey.

When asked whether he would prefer to marry Zara or win the World Cup he said there was no question what he would choose.

Mr Tindall said: “Could we take Zoey out of it? Because obviously if it’s my wife I would marry my wife.”

Princess Eugenie’s nickname for Princess Beatrice: Beabea

This adorable nickname is used by the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson for her big sister.

Eugenie has been spotted using the pet name on social media in personal posts she shares about her sister.

Recently in a congratulatory post on Instagram regarding her sister’s engagement to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Eugenie wrote: “Beabea – wow! I’m so happy for you my dearest big sissy and dear Edo. It’s been a long time coming and you two are meant to be. Photo by me!!”

She previously wished her sister a happy birthday where she wrote: “You have been bossing it since before I was born and continue to be the most wonderful person, friend and big sister… Happy Birthday to you Beabea!! Xx”.

Meghan Markle’s nickname for Baby Archie Harrison: Bubba

Baby Archie Harrison is celebrating his sixth-month birthday today.

Whilst travelling in Africa, Meghan Markle revealed that a nickname she had for her son.

During a meeting with Archbishop Tutu in Cape Town, the Duchess of Sussex was overheard calling her son “Bubba”.

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge’s nicknames for Princess Charlotte: Mignonette and Lottie

Princess Charlotte is the second child and only daughter of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

Footage of the Cambridge children in Kate Middleton’s Back To Nature Chelsea Flower Show garden revealed Prince William’s adorable nickname for his daughter: Mignonette.

But it is not the four-year-old’s only nickname.

Her mother Kate also has a special pet name for Charlotte: Lottie.

While visiting Northern Ireland, Kate revealed whilst speaking to blogger Laura-Ann in Belfast, that she calls her daughter Lottie.

When Laura-Ann mentioned she had another, older son, Bertie, who’s four, Kate Middleton commented that he’s nearly the same age as “Lottie”. 

Prince George’s nickname for Prince William: Pops and Wombat

Prince George will one day become King of England, after his grandfather and father.

But now, aged just six years old, the cute royal warmed hearts across the nation when it was revealed that he calls his father Pops.

In November last year, while visiting Leicester, Kate spoke to a member of the crowd who later told reporters: “Kate said that William was playing football with the children last night and one of them said, I think it was George, ‘Are you playing football tomorrow, Pops?’”

But it is not Wiliam’s first nickname.

His first was given to him by his departed mother Princess Diana who called him Wombat.

In a 2007 interview with Matt Lauer for NBC, Prince William explained that his mother had been called a wombat because of his trip to Australia at an early age.

He told NBC: “It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far. 

“But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal. 

“So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do.”

Prince Charles’ nickname for Meghan Markle: Tungsten

Prince Charles reportedly shares a strong relationship with his American-born daughter-in-law.

According to sources, it did not take him long to coin an endearing pet name for her.

Speaking to the Daily Mail sources revealed that Charles called the Duchess of Sussex ‘Tungsten’, after he likened her tough and unbending personality to the strong metal.

The source told the Daily Mail: “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy.”

Prince Philip’s nickname for the Queen: Cabbage

Queen Elizabeth II has long been referred to as Lilbet within her family.

Her father King George VI in fact famously used to say about his two daughters: “Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy.”

However, it is not the Queen’s only nickname.

Her husband of 71 years, Prince Philip, reportedly calls her Cabbage.

Royal biographer Robert Lacey, told The Sunday Times back in 2006, the Duke of Edinburgh affectionately calls his wife ‘Cabbage’. 

Mr Lacey said: “Yes, I’ve heard that is how he will sometimes refer to her.”
