Royal expert Katie Nicholl explained what she felt the Royal Family needed to do following Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, ahead of the Royal Family’s formal response, Katie Nicholl outlined what their statement needed to convey. She insisted pressure was mounting for the Queen and insisted the statement should be from all the royal households, show unity and denounce the accusations against them.

The Palace has since released a brief statement and insisted it will internally investigate the grievances of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

Ms Nicholl said: “The age-old mantra that has kept the Queen in good stead all of these years has been ‘never complain, never explain’.

“But I think such is the severity of these allegations that reverberations of which have been felt not just here in Britain and across the pond in the United States but around the world.

“They are so serious that there really is a lot of pressure to be released from Buckingham Palace with some sort of explanation.”

The royal commentator added that the Royal Family have been discussing the next steps since the interview aired.

She said: “We do that crisis talks have been taking place at the Palace ever since the Oprah interview aired in the United States.

“I think it has been a case of lockdown for the Palace.

“It has been almost impossible to get a hold of aides and spokespeople and that is because they are working out the best way to respond.”

Ms Nicholl highlighted what she would like to see from the Palace in a response to the interview.

She said: “It would be a statement from all households, they will want to show unity.

“But they are under huge pressure to give some explanation and response to those incredibly damaging revelations.

“Revelations that there is racism at the heart of the monarchy.”

The Royal Family and the Queen have been criticised for the limited explanation in their statement that was released on Tuesday evening.

The statement read: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.

“While some recollection may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”
