Prince Charles less popular than Prince William claims expert

Back in 1649, Charles I was executed outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London, in front of a large crowd. He was found guilty of treason by the High Court of the Civil War rebel “Rump Parliament”. Charles I execution was particularly notable as no other English king had ever been executed before.

To mark the anniversary of the execution over the weekend, Richard Palmer, the Daily Express royal correspondent, said a senior adviser once warned Harry and William he would have been on the side of Parliament during the Civil War.

Mr Palmer tweeted: “When William and Harry were younger, one of their senior advisers liked to remind them he would have been on the side of Parliament in the Civil War.”

Following this tweet, someone commented how advisers should be “wiser than that and less shallow”.

But Mr Palmer put the two brothers in their place saying the role of the Monarch is to serve the people not the other way round.

He replied: “It’s an important lesson for young members of the Royal Family to learn: The monarchy exists to serve Parliament and the people; not the other way around.”

This comes at a time where support for a Republic and the abolition of the English monarchy has been increased.

Republic is an organisation that campaigns for the monarchy to be abolished and for Queen Elizabeth II to be replaced by an elected, democratic head of state.

Yesterday, Graham Smith, CEO of the pressure group told Express.co.uk that following the recent referendums on Scottish independence and membership of the European Union, the UK should now hold a referendum to decide whether to scrap the Royal Family.

Mr Smith said: “Countries are divided on political issues and votes are ways of settling those issues.

“Nothing is ever settled forever, there may be a referendum in the future to return to the EU.

“It is highly likely that there will be a second Scottish independence referendum and there should be a referendum on whether or not we have a monarchy.

“These big constitutional questions about how we govern ourselves should be answered by the British public.

“The idea that we should pretend there is no division by not having a vote is nonsense.

“Divisions exist, arguments are there, and issues need to be resolved.

“These big-ticket issues need to be resolved through a public debate.”

Over the last few years, the Royal Family has faced a barrage of bad press including Prince Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and Harry and Meghan’s departure as senior members of the Firm.

8am update: Prince Charles’ ‘impatient’ personality laid bare by Camilla – ‘Feels everything inside’

Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, has offered insight into her husband Prince Charles’ personality.

The Prince of Wales “would like to save the world”, she said. He is well known for his environmental advocacy and uses organic farming techniques at Duchy Home Farm, on his Highgrove House estate.

In November 2018 Charles celebrated his 70th birthday and the BBC broadcast ‘Prince, Son and Heir: Charles At 70’ to mark the occasion.

The documentary included an interview with the future king and some of those closest to him.
