Writing on Twitter, commentator Nile Gardiner described Harry and Meghan as an “embarrassment on the world stage”, adding: “Their political activism and attacks on the United States are undermining the British Monarchy. Fundamentally wrong for royals to be engaging in US politics.”
This came after Meghan Markle waded into the debate over the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the US, an intervention which Mr Gardiner described as being “fundamentally wrong”. Meghan denounced the decision to pull back abortion rights in the US, saying it tells women that their “physical safety doesn’t matter”.
Prince Harry was also mocked by a US judge for using his speech at the UN to criticise the “rolling back of constitutional rights” and a “global assault on democracy and freedom”.

Social media row as Prince Harry mocked by US judge
Samuel Alito, a conservative judge who wrote the ruling which overturned long-standing abortion rights in America, said: “What really wounded me was when the Duke of Sussex addressed the United Nations and seemed to compare the decision, whose name may not be spoken, with the Russian attack on Ukraine.”
Some royal watchers on social media agreed, with one user, @royalcrown_, writing: “I’m an American & there’s little evidence H&M are well liked here.”
Another, Christine Williams (@Christi34972762) wrote: “The Americans know he no longer represents the Royal Family, the Monarchy or the U.K. he turned on us all. He represents Markledom now.”
But others defended the couple, with TMC (@Thenameis_Tati) saying: “You wish they were an embarrassment. Depends which side you stand on.
“The world from this side is very proud of them both.”
Meanwhile, @dakotarolling wrote: “They’re private citizens. They can have any thoughts and beliefs they want. Since when is healthcare political?”
