The Royal Family has been brutally mocked in HBO Max’s “The Prince”, an adult animated sitcom by Gary Janetti. The cartoon features eight-year-old Prince George as the protagonist, who is harshly portrayed as a horrible spoilt snob – with the Queen and other royals fairing no different. But Alan Cumming, who voices Prince George’s butler, has defended the show and said “it’s not as mean as people think”.

Mr Cumming, who received an OBE in 2009, described the cartoon as being “quite tender”, despite the criticism it has received.

When asked if the Royal Family would see the funny side, the actor told the Telegraph: “I don’t know.

“If they appreciate satire, they might… It’s quite tender, actually – my character with George, it’s a really lovely relationship.

“It’s not as mean as people think.”

The actor went on to discuss Megxit, describing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to quit the Royal Family as a brave one.

Mr Cumming said he admires the couple for “removing themselves from a situation which they found abusive, not just keeping their heads down and staying in ‘The Firm’ and being bullied, which they obviously were. I absolutely have sympathy for them.”

The new cartoon has come under fire from several leading commentators for attacking the Royal Family and targeting a royal who is only eight years old.

Commentator Ryan-Mark Parsons has accused the producers of going “too far”, branding the series as “repulsive” and “cringe-worthy”.

Royal author Omid Scobie also hit out at the producers for targeting a child.

He said: “It may be ‘comedy’ but it comes across as creepy and borderline-bullying.”
