The Duke of York, 61, faced a civil court case brought against him by one of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims, Virginia Giuffre. Ms Giuffre launched the civil case against Prince Andrew in New York accusing him of sexually abusing her when she was 17, a minor under US law – the Duke vehemently denied all claims.

Ms Giuffre alleges he sexually abused her at Ghislaine Maxwell’s home in March 2001, and later at convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s homes in Manhattan and in the Virgin Islands.

On Tuesday, documents submitted to the court from Ms Giuffre’s lawyer David Boies wrote jointly with Andrew’s lawyers said that the parties had “reached a settlement in principle” in the ongoing civil case.

Within the documents, the Duke of York pledged to donate a “substantial” amount to Ms Guiffre’s charity.

The document also states Andrew regrets “his association” with Epstein.

According to the Guardian, Andrew and Epstein’s friendship began when the prince was introduced to him by Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite and Epstein’s girlfriend at the time.

Their friendship was also a focal point of Andrew’s disastrous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview.

Kinsey Schofield, royal commentator and PR expert, claims the Royal Family are “incredibly forgiving” but that Andrew’s association with Epstein and his civil case are an “unforgivable offence” for the Firm.

She told Express.co.uk: “Associating with a paedophile and being accused of sexual assault is a very unforgivable offence.

“I don’t think Prince Charles or King Charles will allow Prince Andrew anywhere near royal events or will ever want Andrew to speak publicly.

“This will be very difficult for Prince Andrew to accept so it will be interesting to see if he complies.”

Kinsey, the founder of the Los Angeles-based royals site ToDiForDaily.com, pointed to the prominent positions now held by Sophie, Countess of Wessex and her husband Prince Edward despite the controversy over the “Sophie tapes” as an example of them showing forgiveness to other Firm members in the past.

In 2001 Sophie, who ran her own public relations firm R-JH Public relations, reportedly met with Mazher Mahmood, a News of the World reporter pretending to be a sheikh.

The royal’s conversation with the journalist was recorded and Sophie made some eyebrow-raising remarks about British politicians.

But as Ms Schofield points out, since then “Edward and Sophie have become such prominent faces since the death of Prince Philip.”

However, Ms Schofield claims the same won’t be possible for Andrew, as she added: “The future of the British monarchy does not include Prince Andrew.”

Andrew was stripped of his official royal status at the start of the year and returned all his honorary military titles and patronages to the Queen.

The Duke of York held 12 military affiliations, including Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, which have now been returned to Her Majesty.
