Thoughts have turned to speculation on what a post-Elizabeth Royal Family will look like in recent months, fuelled by health worries surrounding the 95-year-old monarch. For most, a life before Queen Elizabeth II is beyond memory as Buckingham Palace gears up to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee this year.
This year, a royal expert has suggested, is likely to cement that impression of the Queen for the British public.
Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter described how, “having set a plethora of records, 2022’s Platinum Jubilee will arguably represent the pinnacle of her reign”.
She added: “The Platinum Jubilee will give the Queen the opportunity to express her thanks for the support and loyalty throughout her reign.”
However, many doubt the ability of Prince Charles, 73, to sustain the untouchable position the Queen has long enjoyed with the public.
Graham Smith, CEO of anti-monarchist campaign group, Republic, told Express.co.uk the commentary from the public and the media surrounding the reign of King Charles will be vastly different to that of Elizabeth II.
He believes the Queen is untouchable in public consciousness as a “heat shield” from criticism and questions Charles will find it hard to face.
He claimed: “The Queen’s position has been the heat shield, a protection from all sorts of things, where other institutions would have been roundly criticised and possibly brought down.”
The Queen’s historic reign has broken records for its longevity, with the monarch set to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee this summer.
After seven decades on the throne, Mr Smith stressed just how much respect the Queen commands, suggesting it cannot be matched by the current, longest-serving Prince of Wales.
He added “Prince Charles is not going to inherit the popularity and respect that the Queen enjoys.
“Not even close.”
He discussed how, when the Queen passes away, the Royal Family will experience more than just a change of head of state – the very nature of the monarchy will be exposed to change.

He continued: “It’s going to be a whole different ball game.
“It’s going to be a very different monarchy, and it’s going to be one it’s very easy to criticise openly, and challenge openly.”
This monarchy, he warned, is “just not going to have the same sort of protection that the Queen has afforded it.”
Mr Smith had similar thoughts in 2021, when he warned that “people are very reluctant to go into a critical discussion about the Queen, but they are very happy to do that with Charles and that’s not going to change when he becomes King”.
He added: “So we will have a King who doesn’t resonate with the British public in any way.
“He doesn’t appear to have any kind of link back to our past in a way I think people see the Queen has.
“He is someone who people are very happy to have a go at, criticise and challenge, and he has given people plenty of reasons to do that over the years.”
