Princess Diana’s biographer said the next season of the hit Netflix show will feature the making of his groundbreaking book. Andrew Morton, who in 1992 shook the palace with his biography of the Princess of Wales ‘Diana: Her True Story’, said the fifth season of The Crown will portray his secret partnership with Princess Diana while he was writing the book. Speaking about the upcoming season of the show, Mr Morton told Insider it will include the “drama behind the making of my book”.

And, he added, the show will also feature Princess Diana’s 1995 BBC Panorama interview – during which she famously told Martin Bashir there were “three of us in this marriage”.

The royal author, who also works as a consultant on the Netflix series, interviewed Princess Diana while writing his biography in 1991.

However, he did not ask her his questions face-to-face to protect the Princess of Wales as his primary source.

Rather, he received the royal’s taped answers via a trusted friend.

Shortly after the publication of the biography, Princess Diana said she had told friends and family to cooperate with Mr Morton.

However, both the author and the princess denied she had played any direct role in the writing of the book.

Following her death in 1997, Mr Morton republished his successful book with the title ‘Diana: Her True Story In Her Own Words’, revealing the late princess had been the main source for his biography.

At the time of the writing of his book, Princess Diana and Prince Charles were still married and living together at Kensington Palace.

Speaking to Mr Morton about her life and struggles as a royal, the Princess of Wales gave an intimate account of her eating disorder and suicide attempts.

She also spoke about the breakdown of her marriage and voiced her suspicions the Prince of Wales was cheating on her.

Princess Diana is set to be played by Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki in seasons five and six of The Crown.

However, the Netflix show introduced Princess Diana on screen played, in season four, by Emma Corrin.

Mr Morton praised the actress for her portrayal, saying he thinks she is “by far the best Diana yet”.

He continued: “She depicted that kind of impish sense of humour.

“I mean, in all the tragedy of her life, the sense of humour was always there.

“It was never far from the surface.”

The fourth season of The Crown, which heavily focused on Princess Diana, Prince Charles and Camilla’s relationship, attracted the criticism of many royal commentators, who said the show was portraying a fictionalised version of events featuring people who are still alive and could have a negative impact on the Firm.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk in November last year, following the release of the fourth season of the show: “The idea that all publicity is good publicity is totally bogus.

“Much of The Crown is now turning out to be bogus.

“And from that point of view, I think it is dangerous because I think a lot of people watch it and they don’t know the truth.

“What we are watching is something that is decidedly hostile to the Royal Family.”

Mr Fitzwilliams was among those calling for a warning to be placed before each episode of the show, informing viewers what they were about to watch was dramatised.

Minister Oliver Dowden and Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer were also among those asking for a warning.

However, Netflix turned down these calls, saying it has always presented the show as “a drama”.

The streaming platform added in a statement: “We have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events.”
