Netflix’s fifth season of The Crown has sparked fury from royal fans, as reports indicate the new series will portray Prince Philip pursuing an affair with Penny Knatchbull – hinting at an alleged affair. Lady Penny shared a five-decade friendship with the Duke of Edinburgh, raising questions about the nature of their relationship. A royal expert said making the allegation in a fictional series could prove “really dangerous.”

Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent and a cohost of the podcast DYNASTY, Katie Nicholl told Times Radio’ Off Air with Jane and Fi: “I think it’s really dangerous partly because it is fiction.

“And yet, it doesn’t carry any sort of a disclaimer that it is drama.

“I personally think it should do.”

The royal expert said: “That is a very damaging allegation that he had an affair with Lady Penny.

“Of course, she was the only non-royal member to be at his funeral.

“And they didn’t have a very close relationship, but she was also a great friend of the Queen.

“So, it’s going to be very interesting to see how they present that friendship.”

Ms Nicholl continued: “Similarly, how are they going to handle the Martin Bashir interview in this new series of The Crown?

“But I’m sure it won’t put many off.

“I think it’ll have the reverse effect.

“I think anything about the Royal Family at the moment is frankly watchable, readable, sellable and look at the number of royal books at the moment, right?”

The Countess, who befriended Prince Philip at a polo match in 1975 when she was 20, became Prince Philip’s closest confidante despite the 32-year gap between them.

The Countess Mountbatten of Burma is the wife of Prince Philip’s first cousin once removed Norton Knatchbull, the grandson of Lord Louis Mountbatten.

Lord Mountbatten was the Duke of Edinburgh’s uncle, the youngest brother of his mother Princess Alice of Denmark and Greece.

In its bombshell fifth season, the Netflix hit series is reported to have filmed “intimate scenes” between the two characters even though the allegations have never been confirmed.
