Royal embarrassment: Elton John reveals ‘awkward’ moment he partied with Queen and Anne
The iconic singer has recently released his autobiography ‘Me’. Within the book, he recalled a number of surprise encounters he had with the Royal Family and how his infamous friendship with Princess Diana blossomed and faded. But in one surprise admission, he admitted have a “completely surreal” evening in 1981 at Windsor Castle.
He explained that he had been attending the party with his percussionist Ray Cooper and was due to perform.
But before the performance they joined the dancing in the ballroom of the castle.
He wrote: “Because the Queen was there, and no one wanted to cause any offence to the royal sensibilities, the disco was turned down about as low as you could get without switching it off altogether.
“You could literally hear your feet moving around on the floor over the music.
“Princess Anne asked me to dance with her to Hound Dog by Elvis Presley.
“Well, I say ‘dance’: I ended up just awkwardly shuffling from foot to foot, trying to make as little noise as I could so that I didn’t drown out the music.”
He went on to admit that the Queen soon appeared and joined in the dancing.
He added: “So now I was trying to dance as inaudibly as possible with Princess Anne and the Queen — still holding her handbag — while what appeared to be the world’s quietest disco played Bill Haley.

“She said she had no idea of the book’s contents, which just wasn’t true.”
