Royal crisis: Queen depends on ‘dream team’ Kate Middleton and Wills to save royal family

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William have shown themselves to be dedicated royals in the wake of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announcing their withdrawal. Wills and Kate wowed fans with a day trip to Bradford on Tuesday and remain popular with the British public when other family members have struggled. One royal commentator has dubbed the couple a “dream team” whose job it is to “steady the ship” during difficult royal times.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “The spotlight has always been on William and Kate as it is a royal goldfish bowl.

“However, since Harry started dating Meghan they have been the major media draw as the dynamic duo who were expected to modernise the monarchy.

“Now after the Sussexes’ bombshell announcement that they are stepping down as senior royals, the monarchy’s future lies in the hands of William and Kate and George and his siblings.”

Mr Fitzwilliams claims Prince Andrew’s withdrawal before Christmas combined with Meghan and Harry’s step back has cemented the importance of Prince William and Kate’s roles.

He added: “Of course it always did.

“However, with Andrew in disgrace and unlikely ever to carry out royal duties again, this means 230 patronages need new royal patrons.

“Harry and Meghan have said that they wish to continue their links to the roughly two dozen patronages he and she have.

“Given what has just happened, it is hard to predict the future with any certainty.”

Mr Fitzwilliams’ dismissed claims by some commentators that Wills and Kate are “dull.”

He said: “Some commentators foolishly find the Cambridges dull, yet their charitable work for issues such as mental illness, issues affecting children and the environment are marvellous and reliability is something gator be treasured at the moment!”

“The Cambridges and the Sussexes have fewer patronages than the older royals but have tended to be involved more intensely with those they have.

“The talk of a ‘slimmed down’ royal family is premature however unless they want to undertake far fewer engagements.

He added: “I think the phrase relates to a smaller ‘inner core’.”

Mr Fitzwilliams said Wills and Kate’s ability to “never put a foot wrong” makes them natural guardians of the monarchy.

He said: “The institution’s hopes rest on William and Kate and they have the distinction of never putting a foot wrong, she has a creative side as we saw with the garden at the Chelsea Flower Show and is an influence on fashion.

“They are a dream team, the perfect pair to steady the very rocky ship of state!”

The Cambridges will stand-in for the Queen at a special event on Monday (January 20).

They will host a diplomats reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the UK-Africa Investment Summit.

They will be supported by Princess Anne, Sophie Wessex and Prince Edward at the reception.

The event will mark Kate and Will’s second engagement this year.
