Royal christening: The ironic memorabilia released in honour of a royal christening

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby Archie Harrison will be christened on Saturday in a private ceremony. However, it was Archie’s uncle Prince William for whom the interesting memorabilia was released back in 1982. A limited edition silver spoon was issued to commemorate his christening.

The phrase ‘born with a silver spoon in their mouth’ is a phrase used to mean someone born into a wealthy family.

Ironically, royal fans were invited to buy their own silver spoon for £35, which is a whopping £121 in today’s money.

An advert for the spoon was posted in The Guardian on July 8, 1982, complete with an application form to send off for it.

The post said there was a strict “one spoon per collector” limit.

It also offered a to-scale picture of the solid sterling silver spoon.

The royal christening spoon was created by David Cornell and hallmarked by the London Assay Office.

On the reverse, it had inscribed the prince’s name and date of the christening.

William was christened in the ornate music room of Buckingham Palace on August 4, 1981 to coincide with the Queen Mother’s 82nd birthday.

As is tradition, the service was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and he wore the same gown that his father, grandmother and many other royal babies had worn for their christenings.

Meanwhile, Archie will be christened in the Queen’s private chapel in Windsor Castle, although the Queen herself will be unable to attend.

Around 25 people will be in attendance at the private event, including the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are also expected to be there, despite the rumoured rift between them and the Archie’s parents, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan’s mother will be flying in from the US to attend the ceremony.

As with royal christenings before, the Archbishop of Canterbury will baptise Archie, who will likely wear a replica Honiton lace gown of the one William wore.

The replica was made after the original was considered too fragile to use, and was worn by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis for their christenings.
