Royal chef on two foods King Charles can’t get enough of

King Charles III has long been known as the foodie of the Royal Family, and now his former chef has revealed what the monarch just can’t get enough of.

The recently coronated king is known for being against the production of environmentally unethical foods like foie gras, which he has previously banned from all royal homes, reports The Daily Express US.

Despite the King having a track record for keeping his personal views under wraps, over the years his food-based quirks and aversions have caught the attention of royal fans.

Now, his former chef Darren McGrady, who worked for the monarch for 15 years, has shared some insights into the King’s likes and dislikes.

McGrady revealed King Charles always had a great interest in the kitchen and the food served to the royals, frequently questioning the source of foods being plated up at royal residences.

McGrady recalls Charles’ having a penchant for savoury foods, unlike his late mother Queen Elizabeth II, who apparently had a weakness for chocolate.

McGrady recalled: ”The Queen loved chocolate, dark chocolate.  So anything on the menu with dark chocolate she would choose every time.”

He went on: “[Charles] was not a big fan of desserts, pudding. He would rather have cheese after a meal. [He] is much more of a fan of organic foods, much more of a fan of indigenous produce.”

According to McGrady, the King best enjoyed foods “grown in his own garden” or close to his homes and estates. He added: “He’s a huge fan of eggs and he’s a huge fan of cheese, those are two of his weaknesses.”

“Charles loved to know what was going on in the kitchen. He loved to look around the garden and see what fruits and vegetables are there that can be used in the kitchen and put on the menu. He was really hands-on when it comes to the [kitchen].”

McGrady worked at Buckingham Palace for the late Queen and her eldest son, before going on to work for Charles’ ex-wife Princess Diana, along with their sons Princes William and Harry.

He said: “When I cooked for them they were still young boys, they were royal princes but they still had royal palettes.

“Cooking for them, they loved all the nursery food, the cottage pies, burgers and hotdogs, and fried chicken and pizza.”

Following on from life in the royal kitchens, McGrady is the proprietor of his own venture across The Pond; Winston’s Fish N Chips.

He explained: “I’ve opened an authentic Fish and Chips restaurant. The first one opened in Vancouver, and the next one opened in Dallas. There will be different food trucks across the country.”
