Royal CAUTION: William and Kate ‘careful’ not to overshadow king-in-waiting Charles

Prince William, 37, and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 38, have come to the fore during this time of crisis and shown themselves to be a huge hit with the British public. On Thursday night they delighted fans with a surprise appearance on national television. However, despite William and Kate’s appeal, they are careful not to clash with or overshadow heir apparent Prince Charles.

One royal expert has praised the Cambridges’ recent work and said their more relaxed approach is fitting to their status.

Prince William is second in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles and he and Kate will one day be King and Queen Consort of Britain.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “Last night’s superlative skit involving Prince William and Stephen Fry deserves a BAFTA nomination!

“There have been a series of famous occasions when the royals have promoted events in ingeniously unorthodox ways.”

He added: “The Queen and Daniel Craig as James Bond at the opening of the Olympics is iconic and the Queen and the Obamas supporting Harry and the Invictus Games was a delight.

“The Cambridges have made a series of virtual appearances to support front line services, helped highlight the importance of mental health issues and visited schools.

“Kate has been a fashion icon since her marriage to William and there is enormous interest in what George, Charlotte and Louis wear.

“Their colour co-ordinated appearance supporting the NHS last night was absolutely fabulous.”

“So were the birthday photos of Louis making a colourful rainbow handprint to show support for the NHS.

“The fact that Kate took the photos adds an important personal touch.”

Mr Fitzwilliams claims Prince Charles has taken a more reserved approach to public relations during the coronavirus crisis for several reasons.

As Charles was diagnosed with the coronavirus and has since recovered it makes sense that his communications have been tailored accordingly.

His status as king-in-waiting also demands he behaves in a more conventional manner than younger royals Prince William and Kate.

Mr Fitzwilliams explained: “Charles and Camilla have also been adept in adapting though more formally.”

He added: “His virtual addresses have been conventional as expected.

“The fact he was afflicted by coronavirus, though fortunately, the symptoms were mild, was a leveller in that it showed the nation was suffering and fighting it together, a fact reinforced when Prime Minister Boris Johnson fell ill.”

Prince Charles and Camilla celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary earlier this month and shared a personal post with the public to mark the special milestone.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “Charles and Camilla’s posed with their two dogs to mark their 15th wedding anniversary was particularly enchanting and had obvious appeal to our love of animals.

“Their approach, as he is king in waiting, complements the gravitas of the Queen’s broadcast and the carefully balanced activities of William and Kate who can be more relaxed.”

Mr Fitzwilliams cited Kate and William’s recent interview with BBC Breakfast compared to Prince Charles’ piece in Countrylife as an example of this “balancing” of activities.

He said: “William and Kate spoke openly about the effect the lockdown was having on them on BBC Breakfast.

“Charles has written about how he and Camilla are coping in Country Life and the loving photo of him with Louis also showed the bond he is establishing with his grandchildren.”

Mr Fitzwilliams described the dynamic between Prince William and Kate and Prince Charles and Camilla as “skilful teamwork.”

He said: “This is skilful teamwork too. In recent months Meghan and Harry did not seem to care if their activities clashed with those of other senior royals and this is no longer the concern it once was.”
