Royal BOMBSHELL: How Charles will be a DIFFERENT King because of Camilla
Charles and Camilla first met in 1970 but their romance ended before her marriage to Andrew Parker Bowes in 1973. However, their reignited affair began in 1986 and went on to be seen as a driving factor in the breakdown of Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana. The Duchess of Cornwall has divided public opinion since then, however her marriage to Prince Charles in 2005 signalled a growing warmth and acceptance towards her as part of the Royal Family.
Royal biographer Penny Junor, in her 2017 book “The Duchess: The Untold Story”, explains the strength of their relationship and why she believes that Camilla will make Charles a better monarch.
Ms Junor writes: “Intellectually, Charles will be the best-prepared heir who has ever ascended the throne.
“But emotionally he is less robust.
“She will give him the strength and confidence to do the job.”
Ms Junor also explains that the Queen Mother was the strong wife who shored up King George VI and that Camilla shares many traits with Charles’ beloved grandmother.
Ms Junor writes that, compared to the era of Charles and Diana’s deteriorating marriage when the Prince of Wales was “lonely and depressed”, he is now “happy and fulfilled” with Camilla, which makes him a better prince and father.
She continues: “When the time comes, it will make him a confident capable and I believe much-loved King.
“Without her, there might have been a very different outcome.”
Ms Junor concludes: “Her calmness, warmth, good humour and approachability – and her ability to be very tough when the occasion demands – are everything the nation could want in the uncertain years that will follow the death of such a popular and long-reigning Queen.”
Clarence House has previously stated that Camilla will be known as Princess Consort when Charles does ascend the throne, however veteran royal reporter Jennie Bond has given her opinion that she should take the title of Queen.
Ms Bond, speaking in March 2018 on podcast Pod Save the Queen, said: “I do think Camilla should be Queen.
“I do think she deserves that place and that respect.”
She added: “Camilla always has been the love of Prince Charles’ life – that’s what Diana herself told me.”
