Royal betrayal: The first words Princess Diana uttered to Charles after their separation
During her relationship with Charles, Diana became one of the most recognisable faces across the globe and also one of the most popular. Unfortunately, their relationship came to a bitter end after 15 years of marriage and constant media attention. Writing in her book, ‘The Queen and Di: The Untold Story’, royal expert Ingrid Seward has spoken of the first moment the two met after their divorce became official.
Talking to Ms Seward, Diana revealed the exact setting of their first meeting.
She writes: “On the day their separation was announced, Charles and Diana met in the first-floor drawing room Diana called the salon of her apartment at Kensington Palace.
“They sat together on the yellow brocade-covered sofa.
“‘We asked each other, Why did this have to happen?’”
Away from her relationship with Charles, Diana had formed a strong bond with both her sons, William and Harry.
There was, however, one person who Diana had a very strained relationship with, her mother Frances Shand Kydd.
Writing in the same book, Ms Seward has revealed that Diana never spoke to her mother and even admitted to the expert that she “told her mother nothing”.
Recalling a conversation with Diana not long before her tragic and untimely passing, Ms Seward spoke of how broken the pair’s relationship was.
She added: “I asked, ‘what does your mother think about the way your life is going?’
“Without preamble or warning, Diana’s demeanour changed and she almost shouted back: ‘I don’t tell her anything – ever’”
In shock, Ms Seward referenced how even after a period of time, any mention of her mother would draw a similar reaction.
The two had at times bonded during a shopping trip they took together, but despite that, Diana never repaired the relationship she had with her mother.
