Bhutan’s palace released a series of heartwarming photographs depicting the newest addition to the family of the country’s King and Queen. The snaps were shared more than two months after the birth of the child on March 19, as it had already happened following the arrival of the heir apparent to the throne, four-year-old Jigme Namgyel.

Following Buthan’s royal tradition, the name of the newborn will be made public “soon”, the Royal Court, which represents the King and Queen, said.

For the time being, the child will be simply called Gyalsey, which means prince, by the media and the public.

The pictures were taken in the gardens at Lingkana Palace in Thimphu on May 29.

They show King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Queen Jetsun Pema and their son smiling and cuddling the newborn.

In the first picture, the whole family is united in front of the camera, with the Queen and the heir apparent to the throne looking straight ahead while the King proudly looks at his younger son, wrapped up in a golden blanket.

The second picture shows the Queen alone with the newborn, who appears to be asleep.

The third and fourth pictures show the male members of the happy family, with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel laughing alongside his elder son in one snap and smiling at the newborn, now awake, in the other.

The fifth portrait depicts Jigme Namgyel sitting on his father’s lap as he kisses his brother on his forehead.

These pictures were released not just to mark the birth of the second-in-line to the throne but also to celebrate the upcoming birthday of Queen Jetsun Pema.

The Royal Court said: “To commemorate the 30th Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen on the 4th of June, it is our privilege to share a wonderful collection of photographs of the Royal Family.”

The Queen’s birthday was also celebrated by the official Facebook page of the Queen, run by Bhutan’s Royal Court.

The message read: “With deepest gratitude and love on this special occasion, we offer our prayers for the lasting happiness and health of our Beloved Queen, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen.”

Queen Jetsun Pema married the monarch in October 2011.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel ascended to the throne in 2006 following his father King Jigme Singye’s abdication.

The House of Wangchuck, of which the current Bhutan’s Royal Family is a member, has reigned on the country since it was reunified in 1907, at the end of a civil war.

Before the reunification of Bhutan, the family only governed the district of Trongsa, located at the heart of the country.
