Royal baby joy: Luxembourg royal family makes announcement – who is next in line?

The Luxembourg royal family announced today they are expecting a new addition to their ranks next year. According to the Grand Ducal Palace, which confirmed the news earlier today, heir to the Luxembourg throne Prince Guillaume and his wife Stephanie will welcome their first child in May 2020.

Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg and his wife Stéphanie, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, are expecting their first child next year.

The Grand Duke and Duchess announced their happy news via the Royal Family’s Marshall of the Court earlier today.

In the official statement, the Marshall of the Court confirmed the couple is “delighted”.

They wrote: ”Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and Duchess are immensely pleased to announce that the Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess are expecting their first child.”

“The birth is scheduled for May.

“The Grand Duke, the Grand Duchess and the members of both families are delighted with the news and share their great joy.”

The couple revealed little else about their future child, but the Ducal Palace marked the event with a selection of photos.

The Duke and Duchess were pictured happily embracing in a series of snaps outside the palace, showing their joy at the announcement.

Their first child will be a future monarch of Europe, second in line to the throne of Luxembourg after the Grand Duke.

The announcement came as a surprise to some, as the Grand Duchess once said she was in no hurry to have a child.

Speaking to French magazine Point de Vue in 2016, four years after she married the Grand Duke, she revealed she had “no plans” to have a child.

The Duchess said: “I don’t have any plans to become a mother.”

The Hereditary Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg married seven years ago in 2012, in a spectacular ceremony attended by European royalty and politicians.

Their wedding was hugely popular, with more than 120 international television channels vying for media accreditation to record the event.

Representatives from all of Europe’s royal families were in attendance, including the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume is the next in line to pick up the throne, after his father, Grand Duke Henri.

The second-in-line to the throne is currently the Hereditary Grand Duke’s younger brother Prince Felix, who will drop to third with the birth of his elder brother’s first child.

Prince Felix has two children of his own, five-year-old Princess Amalia of Nassau and Prince Liam of Nassau, aged three.

They will become fourth and fifth in line to the throne respectively.
