Royal baby first glimpse: Meghan’s TOUCHING gesture to echo Queen and Princess Diana
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have given the public its first sighting of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The royal couple posed with their bundle of joy wrapped up in white at St George’s Hall, Windsor Castle, the venue of their wedding reception last year. Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex looked every inch the doting parents during their first interview as a family. Prince Harry held the royal baby with a radiant-looking Meghan at his side as they answered the questions of reporters.
Having taken the unprecedented step of waiting to “celebrate privately” before releasing a picture of their new son, Meghan and Harry did preserve one longheld royal tradition.
Eagle-eyed supporters will have seen Baby Sussex was swaddled in a white merino wool shawl, costing £105, and matching £65 hat by G.H Hurt and Son.
The company also provided shawls for newborns of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, plus the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
While it was a small nod to the Royal Family tradition dating back 70 years, it was an important touch from the couple.
Richard Taylor, director of G.H. Hurt & Son, told Fabulous Digital what the moment meant for the company’s employees.
He said: “All the staff here at G. H Hurt & Son were delighted to see the royal couple emerge at Windsor Castle today, to present their newborn son, wrapped in our traditional hand finished shawl.
“We feel so proud and honoured that Harry and Meghan have chosen our beautiful merino wool lacy knitted baby shawls and in doing so have continued a royal tradition now going back over 70 years.”
The Queen was the first member of the monarchy to introduce the company into the Royal Family back in 1948 when Prince Charles was born.
Archie wore the Leaves and Lowers Baby Shawl in ivory, also available in blue and pink.
What did Meghan say about Baby Sussex?
The Duchess was asked about how she had taken to motherhood, replying: “It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing.
“I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy.”
When asked if Baby Sussex was sleeping well and whether he was a “good baby”, the Duchess replied: “He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm.”
As they both laughed, Harry said: “I don’t know who he gets that from.”
The couple added they were still puzzling over who he looked like as Harry said his looks are “changing every single day”.
Following the big reveal, Meghan and Harry went on to see the Queen and Prince Philip so they could meet their eight great-grandchild.
Baby Sussex’s name was revealed as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor this afternoon.
