Meghan Markle is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry and is due any day now. All eyes are on Frogmore Cottage, where it is thought Meghan will be having a home birth. With suggestions the Duchess is overdue, could Meghan need her labour to be induced? 

According to NHS England, induced labour is one that is started artificially – and this is quite common, with one in five women having their labour induced each year. 

There are a number of reasons for induction, one being complications with either mother or baby, and the other is being overdue. 

The NHS state that most women go into labour spontaneously once they reach the 42-week stage of their pregnancy. 

The NHS also says “induction is offered to all women who don’t go into labour naturally by 42 weeks, as there’s a higher risk of stillbirth or problems for the baby if you go over 42 weeks pregnant.”

If a decision is made to induce labour, the mother will have to attend the hospital maternity unit. 

This could put an end to Meghan’s wish to have a home birth. 

Contractions can be started by inserting a tablet or gel into the vagina. This can take up to 48 hours to start labour. 

Sometimes a hormone drip is introduced to speed up the process.

Is Meghan overdue? 

The Palace has not released any information on Meghan’s due date so we do not know for sure whether she is overdue. 

Meghan previously told fans whilst on a walkabout that she was due late April or early May. 

As it is still early May it is possible the Duchess has not yet reached her due date. 

Not many details are known about the newest member of the Royal Family, but punters seem certain they know the gender.

According to bookmakers Ladbrokes, the odds of Meghan having a girl are 1/2, whilst a boy is 6/4.

After a flurry of bets over the weekend, bookies have slashed odds from 20/1 to just 7/4 that Baby Sussex will be named Ivy. 

Diana is close behind on 6/1, and Grace stands at 8/1. The first male name is Arthur at 12/1.

Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: “It’s by far the biggest move we’ve seen in the Royal Baby betting and punters are clearly getting confident Baby Sussex will be a girl.”
