Prince William and Prince Harry were expected to each deliver a speech paying tribute to their late mother at the unveiling ceremony for a statue of Princess Diana. The two brothers ultimately issued a joint statement in a heartwarming nod to “her love, strength and character.” Royal author Robert Lacey insisted Palace aides had been “wise” to avoid the Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex from giving different speeches.

Speaking to Mail+, Mr Lacey said: “One noted that when the Dyson report came out, William got straight in there with what he wanted to say.

“And then Harry had his version. Harry actually contradicted William.

“He said it’s not just about the BBC, it’s about all media.

“I think they were wise to avoid two separate tributes.”

Fellow royal commentator Richard Eden noted Prince William and Prince Harry had been known to take different approaches when giving a speech about Princess Diana in the past.

Mr Eden said: “I wonder how many drafts had been thrown out.

“I’ll try and find out but I suspect they both wrote speeches that have been thrown out over the years.

“We’ve seen them give speeches about Diana that were very different in the past.”

Prince William ‘got it wrong’ with BBC comments says Lacey

Despite the joint statement, Prince Harry ensures to pay a special tribute to his mother with a virtual address to recipients of the Diana Awards ahead of the unveiling.

The Duke of Sussex said: “Later this week, my brother and I are recognising what would have been our mum’s 60th birthday, and she would be so proud of you all for living an authentic life with purpose and with compassion for others.

“Our mum believed that young people have the power to change the world.

“She believed in your strength because she saw it day in and day out, and in the faces of young people exactly like you, she witnessed a boundless enthusiasm and passion.”

He added: “And I too see those same values shine through.

“As it has done for 21 years now, The Diana Award carries her legacy forward by putting young people at the centre of our future. And this has never been more important.”

The Duke of Sussex’s relationship with his eldest brother has been particularly tense for the past two years due to alleged frictions over his relationship with his now-wife Meghan Markle.

Prince William and Prince Harry have met twice in person over the past 18 months as the Duke of Sussex relocated to California after stepping down from royal duties with the Duchess last year.
