‘Roll the dice to win!’ One way Jeremy Hunt can beat Boris in final stretch revealed

Political strategist and commentator John McTernan reflected on the state of the Tory leadership race between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt. He explained that although Boris is the frontrunner, Jeremy Hunt has the strengths to gain support to become the next Prime Minister. He admitted however that the Tory leadership contest requires a candidate to show cunning and a “feral” attitude to win.

Mr McTernan ultimately concluded that so far Jeremy Hunt hadn’t shown these qualities and would then, in turn, struggle to swing the leadership race direction.

He noted that Jeremy Hunt needed to land a “knockout blow” late in the contest in order to beat the Tory leadership favourite.

Mr McTernan told RT: “When you are the challenger you have got to win every time.

“You have also got to roll the dice every time, you’ve got to take a chance every time.

“Every time the dice is rolled you have got to win and you do that because if you land a knockout blow you can change the direction of the race.

“Jeremy Hunt has never been a politician likely to land a knockout blow.

“He has got great strengths, he is very funny, he is very clubbable, he is a nice guy to be around.

“But you have got to have a bit of feral to win.

“There has not been that cunning, that feral, that what’s the trick, what is the trap, what is the way to pull the legs from under Johnson.

“And not just pull the legs from under him but do it in a way that exposes him to the membership.

“It is all about the votes and as we saw from that survey, people are still going for Boris.

“You have got to land a blow on a place that hurts.”
