Rishi Sunak says Boris will come out 'even stronger' as he leads well-wishers

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has lead well-wishes for Boris Johnson after he was taken into intensive care due to worsening coronavirus symptoms.

The Prime Minister tested positive for Covid-19 at the end of March and is still experiencing symptoms of the virus 10 days later. He was admitted to St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, for tests on Sunday night and has since been moved to the ICU.

This evening, Sunak tweeted: ‘My thoughts tonight are with Boris Johnson
and Carrie Symonds. I know he’ll be getting the best care possible and will come out of this even stronger.’

The Chancellor’s message was echoed by Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who said he was ‘sending all possible best wishes’ to the Prime Minister and his loved ones. He added: ‘I know he will receive the best possible care from our amazing NHS

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, who previously led the daily press conference while Johnson was self-isolating, said: ‘Wishing the Prime Minister a speedy recovery. Look forward to seeing him back in 10 Downing Street very soon.

Johnson also received support from the newly elected Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. Stating that it was ‘terribly sad news’, Starmer tweeted: ‘All the country’s thoughts are with the Prime Minister and his family during this incredibly difficult time.’

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also said his thoughts were with Johnson and his family, while Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted that he was ‘praying’ for the PM’s ‘swift recovery’.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: ‘My thoughts are with the PM
and his family – sending him every good wish.’

Former PMs David Cameron and Theresa May urged Johnson to get well soon, with the latter adding: ‘This horrific virus does not discriminate. Anyone can get it. Anyone can spread it. Please #StayHomeSaveLives.’

While Nigel Farage said: ‘I hope and pray for Boris Johnson to come through this ordeal quickly.’

A Downing Street spokesperson said this evening that Johnson had been conscious while being admitted to the ICU. They added that he had been moved there ‘as a precaution’, should he require ventilation to aid his recovery.

It is thought his condition rapidly deteriorated shortly after the government’s press conference, in which Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab described him as being in ‘high spirits’.

First Secretary of State Raab will now ‘deputise where necessary’ for Johnson while he remains in hospital.
