Revealed: The special skill Prince Charles learned from the Queen Mother
The Prince of Wales explained how his eye for detail was passed down from Elizabeth. In the 2012 ITV documentary ‘The Royal Restoration’, it is explained that many who have worked closely with Charles over the years have mentioned this ability. Asked how picky he really is, the prince explained why he thinks detail is important.
He said: “Well, I think so much is in the detail, actually, when you think about it.
“That’s why it matters in the building development.
“Because people don’t always understand why they feel a certain place makes them feel better, but you often need somebody at a young age to point these things out.”
Presenter Alan Titchmarsh asked the heir to the throne where he learned this skill.
He replied simply: “My grandmother.”
Mr Titchmarsh asked: “Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother?”
Charles said: “Yes, she was very good at pointing out things: ‘Do look at that!’ Yes, you need that.”
The pair were discussing the renovations required to convert an old farm building into an up-market guesthouse.
This building is in the grounds of Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland.
Charles purchased the property for £45million in 2007 for which his charitable foundation had to take out a £20million loan.
Now, the loan has been paid off and the estate has various forms of income to pay for the running costs and to employ local people in a deprived area.
Annabel Elliot, who is Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s sister, was in charge of the interior design of the guesthouse.
She said of Charles: “His eye for detail is quite extraordinary.
“I don’t think I’ve ever worked with anybody who was so interested in the detail.”
Asked if he too will pass down this skill to his children or grandchildren, the prince seemed unsure.
He said: “Well, I try but it depends if they want to listen or not.
“But I happen to be interested or I notice things, I always have done.
“But if you’re encouraged to then I think that’s even better.”
